Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light and light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These marks have minimal visibility and this stunning record looks hardly played and offers the most incredible audiophile quality sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. Way above average for the label and era, this is a real heavyweight CBS original.

Rarity: Quite rare as a first issue and especially so in such supreme condition. One to thrill jazz and jazz-rock connoisseurs.

Brief Info: Within the jazz field there are few equals to the legendary Miles Davis. This master trumpeter was never afraid to progress and find new directions in music and was a true pioneer within his field music. Just look at the line-up of quality featured on this groundbreaking album (seen above). A modern jazz supergroup and the quality is there to be heard from the very opening grooves. A complex and delicate album that marked the beginning of his ‘Electric Period’. The bottom of the front sleeve has the words: Directions in Music by Miles Davis. This great man’s music inspired generations including leading rock bands of the times - his influence can never be understated. Being a more refined and delicate recording, a top quality pressing is more than essential and I am glad to say this is a stunner, looking marvellous and playing to absolute perfection - a superbly preserved record and cover and without any doubt, very lightly played and with the utmost care. A thick, deep grooves early copy that sounds magical offering audiophile quality. The equally fragile cover is gorgeous too with few blemishes and both disc and sleeve will rarely be seen or offered better as an original.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): and a real beauty, any blemishes are few and small. A single format with front laminate. This covers the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by Shorepak and includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The laminate on this cover has a lovely silky semi-gloss sheen rather than a high gloss which is quite normal on this one. It retains a lovely freshness and clarity and shows minimal traces of friction rubs or dulling, even under light and few marks or creases. Any present are very light and minimal and hardly even register, just one faint, very low level half moon just below Davis’s ear. Crucially, all is fully adhered with no lifting whatsoever, an essential noteworthy detail on such a dark cover that would be visually ruined by unsightly blisters. The darker the cover, the more they show, so delighted to state this is not an issue on this black beauty. A cover that simply defies it’s great age and the jazz purist and discerning collector will treasure it.

Cover Back: Now black becomes white on this unprotected side, and again it’s little short of stunning. Just one small mark of near perfection, any traces of grubbiness or darkening on the white surface are minuscule. Only with close scrutiny under light are any ultra fine and faint surface trace marks seen but this back sets a very high standard and others would have to be practically like new to better this. No ringwear, pressmarks, creases and a perfectly clean, grime-free laminate on the spine. This is a class cover.

Top Edge: Practically as made and ultra straight, no scuffs to the fingertip at all.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and notrimming. Minor burr traces being somewhat critical near the very top. How many covers over 40 years old will have absolutely none? Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal traces of compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that again has no scuffs.

Corners: All in stunning, little short of pristine condition with very sharp shape retained.

Cover Summary: A highly impressive all-round example of this classic early 70’s Miles Davis cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: A ‘Sounds of the 70s’ unlined promotional cover is included. Very mildly aged but little to fault overall.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) with any mild surface trace blemishes very minor indeed. This retains the hallmarks of a barely played record and will simply blow most copies into touch. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Even under light, barely any hairlines at all, how unusual is that for a record this great age? Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This jazz giant classic plays up to, and yes, even exceeds it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault whatsoever. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A challenging album with quiet passages as the title suggests, but this supremely pressed record offers offers near silent reproduction and this too on a very revealing system. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean example. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A copy that lives up to it’s title – this plays ‘in a silent way’ and jazz and jazz-rock fans will revel in this. This copy will prove nigh-on impossible to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

End Piece: This is my favourite era of Miles Davis work - the modern ‘electric’ period. In a Silent Way was a prelude the stunning, earth-shattering Bitches Brew double set that was to follow. This album and the ones that followed should appeal to fans of rock music too, not just jazz connoisseurs. This is a work of true beauty and has a sound and atmosphere that few records could ever match. Do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
