MILES DAVIS Birth of the Cool 1964 Capitol Dimensions in Jazz 1st Press T1974 EX
Birth of the Cool compiles the Miles Davis Nonet sessions of 1949–1950 for Capitol, a foundational document of the cool jazz movement. Arranged by Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans, and John Lewis, the nonet's unconventional lineup — adding French horn and tuba to a small horn section — helped define a lighter, more restrained alternative to the bebop of the era. The band featured Lee Konitz, J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Gerry Mulligan, Max Roach, and Kenny Clarke, among others, across tracks including "Move," "Jeru," "Boplicity," and "Godchild."
This is an original US pressing from Capitol's 1964 Dimensions in Jazz reissue series, catalog T-1974 — a repackaging of the original 1957 Capitol T-762 release, and a first pressing of this specific reissue configuration rather than of the 1957 LP itself. The matrix reads T1-1974-F1 on side one and T2-1974-F1 on side two.
Mastered in-house at Capitol; no separate mastering credit is stamped in the deadwax.
The original 1949–50 sessions were produced by Pete Rugolo and Walter Rivers; this compilation was produced by Bill Miller.
Gold/tan Dimensions in Jazz label with a black sawtooth rim, matching the brown cover art centered on a moody photograph of Miles Davis. The back cover carries full session notes, personnel details, and period Capitol catalog advertisements for other titles in the line.
An "I AM" triangle plating mark is etched into the deadwax on both sides, consistent with documented copies of this pressing. A vintage "LAST" record preservative sticker remains adhered to the side one label — a period accessory, not a flaw.
