It was also one of the very first recordings Miles made with his now legendary 'second' quintet, featuring Wayne Shorter on tenor, a 25-year-old Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. For these performances, Davis played almost no material from his albums, focusing instead on his favorite standards. However, it is precisely because he is playing standards that listeners are able to hear just how groundbreaking this quintet was at the time.
