MILE DAVIS QUINTET - COOKIN'

A nice condition and highly presentable copy of this extremely rare and sought after 1958 UK 1st press jazz classic on the coveted UK Esquire label, 32-048 (PRLP 7094)

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  Etched PRLP - 7094 - A with stamped "RVG" at 5 o'clock and "AB at 11.30 o'clock

Side 2  Etched PRLP - 7094 - B with stamped "RVG" at 5 o'clock and "AB" at 11.30 o'clock

The appearance and overall condition of the totally flat and heavy duty vinyl is a solid very good (VG). Both sides have retained an impressive jet black lacquered sheen and in normal daylight look great with no obvious sign of wear, just a couple of very mild and small scuff marks on each side coming into view - very impressive. Under a very bright light, and with close scrutiny, a number of hairlines and small scuffs are more easily identified on each side, however, but all of these are non-"feelable", appear to be surface only (though there is about one minute of very light, background rotational clicking on track 1, side 2, and further light - but audible - clicking part way through track 3 on the same side). Note the all-important Rudy van Gelder ("RVG") dead wax stamper on each side of the vinyl, a unique identifier of a true 1st pressing.

The labels are excellent (EX). Gorgeous condition labels with the coveted Esquire logo text, and dark blue text upon a matt textured cream background - all perfectly intact. Under a bright light I can make some small and very faint spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label, but apart from that perfect!

The iconic front and back laminated outer sleeve is very good (VG), possibly nudging into "VG+" territory. Such an iconic sleeve, but so fragile and prone to wear and tear and so hard to come across a UK 1st pressing in excellent condition or better. Each edge on this copy remains rigid with virtually no scuffing though there are x5 very small "nicks" on the spine - the spine text remains perfectly intact and legible, however. There is some obvious scuffing on each corner with a 1cm edge tear on the bottom right corner, and x6 horizontal 1cm light surface creases perpendicular and adjacent to the spine on the front side. Apart from the scuffed corners the reverse side is excellent, with all text remaining perfectly intact and the top and bottom flipbacks in great shape. No unwanted writing or doodles, and no obvious age discolouration. 

Finally, the quality of the audio is a solid very good (VG). Actually, the audio quality ranges between excellent (track 2, side 1 for example) and very good minus (parts of side 2). (Impressive tone and clarity throughout, even at higher volume and on higher frequencies. No skips, jumps, repeats, or nasty clicks but there is about one minute of rotational clicking on track 1, side 2, and a further 2 minutes of light (but audible) clicking on track 3 on the same side. There is also some minor background crackle at the beginning of each side - nothing nasty here but it does exist to a limited degree. This is not to say that the record does not make for a great listen - it does, especially side 1 - but if you are looking for a perfect playing copy of this 1st press jazz gem then this copy is not for you. Certainly this record offers the opportunity to sit back and wallow in the genius of five great jazz musicians at the top of their game : MILES DAVIS (trumpet), JOHN COLTRANE (tenor sax), RED GARLAND (piano), PAUL CHAMBERS (bass), PHILLY JOE JONES (drums).

In summary a solid very good condition copy of this extremely rare and highly sought after 1958 UK 1st press jazz gem, with some blemishes but still very presentable and highly listenable - a worthy addition to any serious vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl thick cardboard crucifix style mailer along with at least two cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

Mint

The records itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items, such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Fair

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents are torn, stained and/or defaced

Poor

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents are badly damaged or partly missing.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
