Album Title: Quiet Nights.

Label/Format: CBS – very early format with an entirely rough textured surface and the 33 speed indicator. Intense orange and a very flat matt finish. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both near immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Although the record has a few minor paper scuffs, it has all the hallmarks of one that has been hardly played, reitterated by wonderful clean sound.

Cat Number: SBPG 62213.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 154 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare rare and this being in stereo too. An early jazz giant in wonderful conditions, this will never be easy to find like this.

Musicians: Miles Davis - trumpet; George Coleman - tenor saxophone; Victor Feldman - piano; Ron Carter - bass; Frank Butler - drums; Gil Evans orchestra.

Brief Info: This is an early 60s Davis gem, a more gentle Miles under the influence of Brazilian rhythms. His quintet feature on ‘For Summer Nights’, the Gil Evans orchestra form the backing for the other tracks. A very early pressing surviving in lovely all round condition and was a real delight to listen too. For fans of the legendary trumpeter and one of greatest jazz musicians ever, this is an indispensable set.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++, a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges on to three external rear flipbacks. This is a dedicated stereo cover, this was printed and made in England but has no printer’s credits.

Lamination & Front: Solid, clear, fresh with a fine shine, all adhered bar one tiny sliver lift on the bottom edge near the left corner (but look hard). Few marks and any friction rubs or dulling are confined to the very top and bottom around the rim impression. With barely any creasing at all, this vintage cover front will take a huge amount of beating.

Cover Back: If the front is impressive, the back is even better, being unprotected, this has aged superbly and any discolouration or grubbiness hardly even registers. Again very clean and uncreased, the back panel is superb and the three flipbacks are also clean and undamaged with no grime-line formations on their ends which remain free of scuffs. Quite exceptional.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same again up to the right corner tip that has chipped.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with barely any real wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically perfect as made, just tiny tip rubs: solid, very straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: A couple of small tip rubs or chips, most on bottom right but still only small. Very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this vintage jazz cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner: This early 60s album includes its original plain white, polylined inner in superb condition. A little mild glue darkening on the unsplit seams is the least anyone could expect. The window is immaculate and still clear, one corner crease but net with barely any ruffling and no tears. This has the text ‘British & Other Patents Pending’. I grade this as strong excellent.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX(-) is being over-harsh for a highly attractive record of this vintage. A super visual copy that is very clean with an impressive rich shine, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence, reitterated by lovely clean sound and this is a fairly quiet album. There are some light surface marks as hairlines and the odd ultra faint paper scuff or two - these have no sound and these minor blemishes are only really apparent with angled viewing under light. Visually a super record of considerable vinitage that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely jazz record plays above its lovely visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this being a genuine high fidelity recording. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. As stated above, this is a fairly gentle album and the fewer plays the better and this has survived those early days largely unscathed by the perils of old record players. Being a stereo copy I think it’s a safe assumption the owner had better equipment to play it on. Jazz fans were usually very discerning on quality and most looked-after their records. At this great age, minor surface marks will happen of course but few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
