Although chronologically the last to be issued, this collection includes some of the best performances from the tapes which would produce the albums Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and ultimately, Steamin'. A primary consideration of these fruitful sessions is the caliber of musicians -- Miles Davis (trumpet), Red Garland (piano), John Coltrane (tenor sax), andPhilly Joe Jones (drums) -- who were basically doing their stage act in the studio. As actively performing musicians, the material they are most intimate with would be their live repertoire. Likewise, what more obvious place than a studio is there to capture every inescapable audible nuance of the combo's musical group mind. The end results are consistently astonishing. At the center of Steamin', as with most outings by this band, are the group improvisations which consist of solo upon solo of arguably the sweetest and otherwise most swinging interactions known to have existed between musicians. "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" is passed between the mates like an old joke. Garland compliments threads started by Davis and Coltrane as their seamless interaction yields a stream of strikingly lyrical passages. There are two well-placed nods to fellow bop pioneers Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie on a revision of their "Salt Peanuts." Philly Joe Jones' mimicking cymbal speak -- which replicates Gillespie's original vocals -- is nothing short of genius. This rendition is definitely as crazy and unpredictable here as the original. Thelonious Monk also gets kudos on "Well, You Needn't." This quintet makes short work of the intricacies of the arrangement, adding the double horn lead on the choruses and ultimately redefining this jazz standard. Although there is no original material on Steamin', it may best represent the ability of the Miles Davis quintet to take standards and rebuild them to suit their qualifications. -- All Music Guide

COVER IS IN VG++ CONDITION WITH SOME RINGWEAR AND LIGHT DAMAGE TO THE TOP SEAM.
VINYL IS IN VG++/EX CONDITION WITH LIGHT SCUFF MARKS AND LIGHT SURFACE SCRATCHES. IT PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY WITH OCCASIONAL LIGHT SURFACE NOISE.
WE HAVE LOOKED LONG AND HARD AND HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THIS RARE GOLD LABEL ISSUE OF THIS CLASSIC!

RECORD GRADING POLICY
MINT = like new or near new with only one or two small insignificant defects, a 9 or better on a 1-10 scale
EXCELLENT = Would be Near Mint, except for a couple of light hairlines or scuffs, which do not affect play
VG++ = still a very nice record with all or nearly all of its original gloss but may have a few more light, surface marks, hairlines, needle tracks or the like which should not materially affect play
VG+ = a nice, but used record that may have a series of light scuffs or scratches. It probably plays with a few pops, but has no serious problems.
VG = a well-used record that still should sound OK when played, but may have moderate surface noise, pops, etc.
VG- = a very well-worn record that plays through without skipping, but will do until a better copy comes along.
Good = not actually good at all but probably will play through but with much in the way of surface noise, pops, crackles, etc. Still, will have no cracks, chips or the like
Fair = you are getting this record just to own but not to play
Poor = the sky's the limit, generally I will discard a record this bad (and sell the cover, jacket or sleeve alone) unless the label holds some particular interest

PLEASE NOTE: We have set our shipping prices to cover costs on an average basis. You may be charged slightly more - or less - than the actual cost of postage; Priority postage varies according to destination, records and jackets vary in weight, all of which makes it impossible to set an exact "correct" price for all customers, especially internationally. We ship all LP's in new (unused) custom LP mailers. We pack records with filler pads, placing the disc in an inner sleeve outside the cover to prevent seam splitting in transit. Part of our postage fee covers the cost of the mailer and pads (which currently costs us up to a dollar per).
