To be clear, this is not a recording of Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk playing together. If that's what you're looking for you'll find it on the two takes of "Bag's Groove" on Bags' Groove.  Miles & Monk at Newport contains recordings made separately by the Miles Davis Sextet and the Thelonious Monk Quartet.

Miles Davis' recordings make up side one, and they were recorded in 1958.  Thelonious Monk's tracks were recorded in 1963, and they're on side two.  Hmmm.  It occurs to me that this album will probably make little sense on CD.  At least on vinyl Miles is on one side and Monk is on the other.  The separation is key to enjoying this album, so I suppose if you're listening to a CD or some other digital medium you'll just have to mentally note the changing of the bands.

Well, I've probably let the cat out of the bag.  What makes this album work is that it gives the listener an opportunity to compare two jazz masters on a single album.  Specifically, it's interesting to compare how the music that their bands are playing is shaped by their leadership.

Miles Davis' sextet has an all star lineup that includes  John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley with the rhythm section of Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly and Jimmy Cobb.  Coltrane and Adderley are very important components of the music on this record.  The three play together as if they know for a fact that they're the three baddest motherfuckers to ever step on stage and they're going to prove it (and by the way, if Miles ever called you a motherfucker that was a good thing).  Coltrane and Adderley both rip through some mind-bending runs.  It's macho, cocky and full of swagger.

Monk's approach is very different.  He's not out to prove anything.  He's on stage to play his music his way.  Pee Wee Russell  plays clarinet on these tracks, and the contrast between his approach and what Coltrane and Adderley are doing is striking.  While Davis' boys were busy kicking the snot out of every eight bar phrase that they could get their hands on, Russell is playing melodic old-time licks that would have been right at home coming from the stage of a Benny Goodman show.  When Monk responds to Russell's inclinations with retro licks of his own you can almost see the two smiling at each other.  They're having fun and replaying musical jokes and memories.  It's a very different feeling from the prize fighter mentality of the Davis set.  This, I believe, is how the personalities of the bandleaders comes through, even through the music of the other members of their respective bands.

The tracks on Miles & Monk at Newport aren't great, at least not for these characters.  Releasing them together, though, does make for an enjoyable listening experience.

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-       Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)   (BARELY VISIBLE)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: WE RECOMMEND (BUT DO NOT INSIST) that you select USPS International Priority Mail when making a payment.
