MINOR THREAT

LYLE PRESLAR, JEFF NELSON, IAN MacKAYE, STEVE HANGSEN, BRIAN BAKER

One of the most important and influential '80s punk bands, a group of idealistic,

politically minded D.C. teens led by Ian MacKaye. Minor Threat was the definitive

Washington, D.C., hardcore punk band, setting the style for the straight-edge punk movement

of the early '80s. Led by vocalist Ian MacKaye, the band was staunchly independent

and fiercely sober. Through their songs, the group rejected drugs and alcohol, espoused

anti-establishment politics, and led a call for self-awareness. Every song was fast, sharp,

and lethal, often clocking in at just around a minute. Their speed and fury often hid their

fairly catchy melodies, but the band's main function was to vent rage. Over the course

of three years, Minor Threat released two EPs, one album, and several singles,

all of which were quite popular in the American punk underground. Their records

and concerts helped spawn straight-edge, an American punk lifestyle based on

the group's intense, clean-living ideology. Following the disbandment of Minor Threat,

MacKaye formed Fugazi, who became one of the more popular

American indie rock bands of the late '80s and '90s.

RECORD EX but (please, read above description)

SLEEVE EX but (please, see pictures and read above description)

The only official album Minor Threat ever released was a mere nine songs -- but that was enough.

Building on the promise and fire of the band's earlier singles, Out of Step

instantly became iconic for American hardcore, not to mention for the D.C. scene,

for years to come, as well as any number of bands who conflated personal

and social politics. That any number of restrained turn-of-the-century emo acts

could refer to songs on Out of Step as much as fiery punk's-not-dead

revivalists is demonstration enough of the record's impact. By this point

the band had moved beyond the straightforward explosions of sound that

characterized the earliest numbers. Songs like "Betray" and "Little Friend"

contain sudden, heart-stopping pauses, with full-bodied production

that's as much thrash metal as it is trebly punk squeal...(AllMusic)
