VERY CLEAN...1968 first pressing in thick gatefold cover of the TURTLES at the BATTLE OF THE BANDS ...they perform as different groups battling it out with each other!
The Turtles are usually lumped in the sunny 60's American pop group category. But they were doing something that was definitely cooler than most of their contemporaries. There is a knowing ridiculousness that couldn't have been better crafted than the way the Turtles do it. An interesting concept album, they are capable of creating quirky, yet touching songs. None better than 'Elenore' obviously. The Turtles had something good going on. I mean, Zappa appeared to be listening... But that's another story. Very good, enjoyable album. Unfortunately it is usually overlooked to the casual rock fan.
One of the more interesting concept albums from the sixies, entirely underrated; the album is presented as a battle of the bands. Each song is presented as played by a unique band in their own unique style, ranging over a pretty wide set of genres.
Obviously, the Turtles themselves are the only band behind these tracks. The concept is carried to the inside of the gatefold album artwork, which shows the group as MC's on the outside front of the gatefold cover, open it up to reveal the Turtles, in disguise, in costume as the bands participating in the battle.
It works well -- the band expects the listener to accept the concept as the main glue holding the album together. If you go in with that mindset, it fits perfectly. Luckily, the quality of the writing stays consistently quite good throughout the entire record, and the tongue-in-cheek humor kind of helps things along without overpowering or overshadowing anything. Overall, a groovy listen. Favourite songs among others: "You Showed Me", "Food", "Elenore", "Buzzsaw" and "Earth Anthem"

CONDITION: The thick gatefold cover is stiff TOP level clean M- usually found with shelf wear due to the dark color, this one is clean with just a smallest bit of shelf wear on back cover. No seam splits, no bends and no writing = collectible keeper!
The vinyl plays top level, clean...all glossy sides, glowing clean grooves, M- ...enjoyable keeper.
