PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. TOP COPY
BEAUTIFUL like new and 43 years old 'ARCHIVE' COLLECTIBLE!
Original 1969 first pressing in thick gatefold - one of the best copies we've come across of this early progressive rock artifact!
Colosseum's first, was and still is an ear-opener, showing what excellent musicians playing excellent music, can do. Drummer John Hiseman had played jazz and blues throughout England, Dick Heckstall Smith (who could do a Roland Kirk and play several wind instruments simultaneously), had long paid his dues with Graham Bond and John Mayall and had become one the better known UK musicians. While the then relative new names of James Litherland (guitar and vocals), Dave Greenslade (keys, son of a musician and bandleader) and Tony Reeves (bass and producer), contributed in their equal ways, to produce an album that remains a classic almost 39 years later...For whatever reason, the USA pressing -here (gatefold cover) and UK pressing contain different tracks from each other.
Highlights include ~ the best version of Graham Bond's great R&B tune "Walking In The Park", (although Bond's own version, released as a single a few years early, is a close second). The other tunes all cover a lot of musical space, as one might expect from the types of musician involved. Straight blues to jazz, and with Dave Greenslade's presence, there is a smattering of serious and even prog rock. The whole drives along, and because of the mix of musical styles and influences should hold your interest throughout, whether as slow burning blues or a more complex-based solo. Plain-bluesy "Plenty Hard Luck" is a great showcase of Litherland's vocals and Greenslade's organs. With "Kettle", we now reach a definitely more serious level of composing with bassist Reeves showing us the way to enlightenment and the path to many rhythm changes and time signaturess, this track is the first sign that this group had something really special and culminating in an unrefined (as in unpolished) guitar solo. Following tracks called "Debut" is according to them, the first thing they played, and is again quite happily-communicative and it does sound like the ideal training ground for a band to get their stuff and tricks together.
"Valentyne Suite"" is another brilliantly played tune and clearly is the same Bach chord sequence than Procol's Whiter Shade of pale, the tracks evolves into a harpsichord and searing bluesy guitar wailings while D H-S is wailing freely on his reeds. Poly-rhythms dictate a fairly paced and atmospheric track, while remaining very swingy as the piano takes over in boogie constrasting strongly with the wordless vocals scattings. Slow blues is again showing where Litherland's strengths were but ultimately, this would also prove his own undoing in the band as well. For a proghead, this track overstays a bit too much its welcome, but in its own genre this track is a killer. "those Who are About To Die Salute You" closing off the album is a very up-tempoed complex-laced RnB with plenty of rhythm and time signatures, Hiseman driving his drums like footsoldiers through marshes and swamp alike as the Roman emperor would if he was out to conquer new grounds. This album is a stunning progressive-rock debut.
