TOP COPY! ....MINTY CLEAN ALL OVER!!!

Ages old vintage early '70s second-press of the 1967 first LP by a rather interesting hippie-rock artifact ...possibly the better of their two Lp releases...we found this a somewhat unusual mix of heavily Byrds influenced folk/rock featuring jangly 12 string guitar, and rather snotty garage punk rock with fairly hard material. Overall, it's a very consistent album and an excellent first album by CIRCUS MAXIMUS.

Had CIRCUS MAXIMUS received a little more exposure during its brief existence, they would undoubtedly be spoken of in the same reverential tones as Buffalo Springfield. Indeed, the competition in songwriting between Jerry Jeff Walker and Bob Bruno mirrors the duel between Neil Young and Steve Stills. Both writers turn in an outstanding repertiore on this album. Bruno is clearly the heavier, more psychedelicized of the two. His compositions rely mostly on volume, but work quite well. "Travelin' Around", "Rest of My Life To Go", and "Bright Light Lover" are high-energy, fuzz-guitar-drenched rave-ups, and "Chess Game" is a spiritual cousin to "White Rabbit". These are contrasted nicely by the folkrock exuberance of Walker's "People's Games" and "Oops, I Can Dance". "Lost Sea Shanty" is catchy as well, despite some heavy-handed lyrics.

With nice use of fuzz bass and/or guitar on some tracks. The album has a lot of strong harmonies, and it stands apart from a lot of other 60's rock by not sounding so dated. A fact due to their lyrical themes of war, greed etc. which never will be irrelevant to society.

*Travellin Around: is a fast paced, tight up-beat, fiercely delivered grating-vocal, which devolves into the songs chorus/hook. This song works really well. For fans of fuzzy garage-punk (yeah that's an egregious label for this).

Lost Sea Shanty : jangly love-peace-and-harmony feast indicative of the year this was made.
*Oops I Can Dance: a follow up jingle-jangle tune to it's forerunner, here the lyrics still smell of hippies patchouli oil) as they pertain to life in general, not "everyones scene..."

*Rest of My Life to Go: nice young person's song, if weren't for the raging fuzz-bass and the jangle-guitar aside makes this a nice angsty-teen song.
*Bright Light Lovers: as the title suggests, here we get a love song that starts out cringe-worthy but then rips into another fuzz bass/jangle guitar, that soon gives way to a foot-stomping lyrical delivery. Song has a really strong chorus. You may be feeling this.

Chess Game: the jingle-jangle plus the "stoned white queen" equals "pass" for some listeners. Mildly redeeming chorus.

Side 2:

People's Games: sophisticated vocal arrangements start off the second side prevailing throughout, with a strong melody to lace the lyric delivery. This is a pretty up-beat folky number. If you're in the mood it's good...
Time Waits: Real mellow tune with relatively strong melody throughout...

Fading Lady: slow folk-ballad type song, acoustic guitar, soporific lyrics (read: pass the bong)

Short-Haired Feathers: just got woke up by an organ, where did that come from. Good placement on this track, if it had the fuzz we'd like it even more, def. one of the more 'rocking' songs on the album...
Wind: let the breeze take you away!!!

CONDITION: The cover:  A hard one to find clean, after 45 years the dark cover USUALLY shows wear. Here, a TOP level M- front and clean M- group photo back cover ...it's very collectible (see photo)....as in final collection worthy

The vinyl: highly smooth and clear grooves rate at M- at first glance you know ... plays outstanding as well...with clean labels too...

keeper!

A GREAT ADDITION TO ANYONE'S COLLECTION !
