MINT CLEAN VINYL ... UNCOMMONLY MINT clean cover too (see details below)
RARE!! Original 1969 first pressing in the old UNI Records label, known for great psych albums, and in the usual old styled unipak gatefold cover...
One of thee hardest to find covers without wear, this cover is immaculate! Try finding a cover THIS clean! Think twice!
The obscure and highly sought after FIELDS, an underground hardrock psych trio with loads of cool fuzz guitar injected into the original tunes...
OK first off, this band bears no relation to the keyboard based English group of the same name.
Fields were a US psych-bluesrock trio consisting of Richard Fortunato (lead vocals and guitar), Patrick Burke (bass) and Steve Lagan (percussion). They existed for only about a year or so, released one single (Bide My Time), this eponymously titled album, and they collapsed after touring together, yeah, vanished witout a trace....
The LP itself comes in a somewhat op-art psych-pop designed gatefold sleeve, with the cover mixings of purple, green and mustard-yellow, with a sepia band photograph forming the centrepiece.
Musically, this is a blending of styles, but it works quite nicely. An obvious influence is the hard blues-rock of the likes of Cream, but there’s also acid-rock and psychedelia --and the album as a whole is very raw.
Side One consists of songs between 3 and 5 minutes and for me the standout track is Take You Home – which was the B-side to the Bide My Time single. It’s a heavy blues rocker, with great riffs, which is basically about just wanting to get it on with a girl. Jump On You is also pretty cool as well – and one can only presume it’s what happens once Fields have taken you home.
But the real treasure of this album is Love is the Word, the 18-minute epic crazy-fest that takes up the entirety of Side Two. You kind of have to just hear, as it defies explanation --it is the sound of Sgt. Pepper’s, The Doors, and Cream's Clapton having been put in a blender, mixed up and then unleashed in an actual (long) song with a structure. A lunatic structure, but a structure nonetheless.
All in all, its an interesting album, highly worthy by the sought psych & sixties fans out there -- plus, they get points for (allegedly) being named after the great W.C. Fields.
