AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE was the follow-up to ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?, and represented a much more conscious use of the recording studio's possibilities.
-
Axis: Bold As Love is striking for its coherence and the wonderful balance of the songs. After we have digested the shock of the ultra cheesy Second-hand-India-hippie-store-sleeve, and finally came to the conclusion that sixties artwork cannot get any cooler, the high-spirited joke of “EXP” fanfares the advent of strongest psychedelia, even in the rocking Jimi Hendrix Experience. The easy-going swagger of “Up from the skies” only confirms that there’s a wider array of styles waiting for the listener.
Apart from Jimi’s almost subdued guitar jobs, especially the drums are fabulous on this album.
Axis: Bold As Love is really dripping with spaced-out wah-wahs, blurry echoes and psychedelic colour-bubbles; all to its advantage! Whereas Are you Experienced crashed through the gates, Axis: Bold as Love allows for a more laid back approach, featuring most of Hendrix’s loveliest ballads (the canonical “Little Wing” and “One Rainy Wish”). At the same time, of course the issues of the day: freaks vs. conservatives is engraved forever in the stoned acid-rocker “If 6 Was 9”. To loosen up, however, the blues-rock and some manic stompers have not been left outside. The throbbing “You Got Me Floatin’” certainly is the most fun-moment of this ‘mellow’ album and ranks as Hendrix’s most overlooked ‘lesser contribution’. Yet, even when it gets heavier, an underlying funkiness and the skill for great sixties grooves always remains.
The majority of tracks in general moves inside a rather concise pop-paradigm, with catchy hooks, a pleasant groove and sensible running time. “Wait till tomorrow” might be the group’s best catchy-tune in this respect. -
Axis: Bold As Love is not absolutely flawless, but perfectly solid throughout It remains Jimi’s most intriguing collection of songs and his best-working album. An album that is clearly ahead of its time, even seemingly straight-forward songs feature excellent effects and arrangements to make them little gems. -
Finally, a huge rainbow shoots out of Jimi’s guitar in the ultimate psychedelic-rock solo of the title track > Axis: Bold As Love (changing the musical key, by the way). Embrace each other, make love, wave your freak-flags, / play on drummer…/

CONDITION: The cover: Rated: M (-) TOP final collection copy, absolutely colorful and solid all over; having no real prior use detectable. The artifact is from 50 years ago in extremely collectible condition when usually found with a lot of wear. The insides of the gatefold rate: M- .... colors remain brightly clean, there are no delete marks, no split seams, no bends and no writing ....
The vinyl: Rated: M- bright clear shine over both sides with no discernible marks which might be cause of anything less than reflecting minty clean audio as represented. Having very clean visuals and notable deep groove pressing should therefore be considered to be listed among previously used but "nice" relics from the sixties. The term "used" in this case with a footnote deeming lightly, carefully, seldom, barely, so expect super audio without alarming surface noises ...also has spotless 3-color steamboat Reprise labels!
