Moby Grape's first pressings of the first debut album was released in small quantities in the USA with a large poster, repeating the cover image. The first issue has an image of the band with Don Stevenson ''giving the finger'' on both cover and poster. As this was (belatedly) considered to be obscene most copies were retired and replaced with a new cover in which the finger had been airbrushed.

This the ORIGINAL US MEGA RARE MONO 1st pressing from 1967 WITH THE RARE LARGE POSTER AND "FINGER" PHOTO IN THE FRONT SLEEVE. This LP is seriously RARE AND  ALMOST IMPOSIBLE TO FIND COMPLETE PARTICULARLY IN STEREO!It is the genuine article and in MONO!

This is how you'd have heard it on pirate radio back in the 60's. Not many people had stereo in those days. It definitely has a different sound and is mixed as it was originally planned to be. 

Mono was the main format of the day and so those mixes were done at separate sessions for each track. Mono was where all the work and time went and the stereo mix was pretty much cobbled together as an afterthought.

The heavy weight vinyl is visually graded in very good condition. Please see below a description of the grade as this is a 47 year old record that has been well played and will not transform into anything else. The value of this record is his rarity rather than its condition. 

The RED Columbia labels are in excellent minus condition and the name Susie on side 2.

The delicate thick cardboard black sleeve with the finger photo is in excellent condition with ring, edge and corner wear. The name Susie is discreetly written on the front but has mostly wore out.

The spine is fully readable in excellent minus condition with corner and edge wear.

THE LARGE POSTER WITH THE "FINGER" PHOTO IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION (Never on a wall). ANY MARKS ARE DUE TO HAVE BEEN FOLDED INSIDE THE LP FOR THE LAST 47 YEARS.

Visually-graded vinyl: A visual grading will identify physical flaws (such as scratches) and can help determine whether a record has been cared-for properly. A visual grading will not identify noise or crackle caused by non-visible sources. Most of the records I sell are between thirty and fifty years old and so it is likely that there may be some background noise even if they look perfect.

Guide to grades used

Mint                      

Cover - Looks new - no marks, wear or damage

Disc - Looks unplayed - no marks visible 

Near Mint              

Cover - Looks virtually new with signs of handling- Minor wear creases but no marks or damage. Light sleeves may show slight discoloration due to age.

Disc - May have minor scuffs &/or hairline scratches caused by moving record in & out of paper sleeve

Excellent                

Cover - Slight signs of wear on edges/spine, corners or ring wear. No damage caused by sticker removal/residue.

Disc- The record has been played and has superficial marks &/or hairline scratches and paper scuffs.

Very good              

Cover - Moderate edge/spine or ring wear. Corners may be a little blunt. Opening edge may show feathering caused by removal of record. Visible creases or laminate lift. Localised sticker removal damage.

Disc - The record has been played frequently and has noticeable surface marks, occasional light scratches and paper scuffs.

Good                      

Cover - Heavy ring or edge/spine wear. Corners noticeable bashed. Heavy creases. Considerable laminate/surface damage.

Disc - The record looks very well played and the sound quality has probably deteriorated noticeably. A lot of surface marks/scratches. Usually used as collection filler

MONO records: Mono records and stereo records have different grooves. A stereo record produces a stereo sound via both lateral and vertical groove modulation whereas a mono record is not intended to produce any sound from vertical modulation. Playing a mono record with a stereo cartridge will create distortion because it is trying to pick-up the vertical (stereo) part of the signal, whereas this is not intended to be heard on a mono record and so is just noise.  Using a pre-amp with a mono switch will eliminate the noise caused by vertical modulation leaving just the lateral groove signal which is how the record was intended to be heard. If you do not have a mono switch on your amp or pre-amp you will be reproducing the noise from the vertical part of the signal and so the record will not sound as good. This is not any fault of the record, it is inherent to playing any mono record through a system that it was not designed for.

I am not a dealer but an amateur collector selling duplicated items or records that I no longer want to keep (mostly due to space). I do not clean records (other than a dust with anti-static) and unless indicated in the listing the records have been only visually inspected.
