Ian Jones on Mods Mayday 99

Ian Jones ex Long Tall Shorty, now in Ian Page's band The Affair gives us an insider look in Mods Mayday 99

Through out the summer of 98 I had been rehearsing with John Wratten a great guitar player and Paul Guidotti on drums, both from Small World and both good friends who I have known for years. Small World played the Mersea Island MODS DAY OUT gig in 98 so our new band had to be put on hold for a while, but not dead!

December was now approaching, Paul and I and two other friends played a short set at The Borderline London W1 for a Christmas party, then 2 days later Paul gives me a call to tell my there is to be a Mods Mayday 99 and that Ian Page (the ex singer of Secret Affair ) is looking for a bass player to do the Mods Mayday 99. A few phone calls later and I am talking to Paul Robinson (a partner of Dave Porter and Glory Boys Music) Ian: Hello Paul, my name is Ian Jones and Paul Guidotti told me that Ian Page is looking for a bass player, is the job still vacant ? Paul: yes Ian: Good, What do you need to know. I told Paul a small bit about my music history and he told me he would let me know.

A rehearsal date was set for the first free Sunday in January at Chelmsford ’s Amber studios, so I spent most of Christmas listening to Secret ffair’s LP’s. The first rehearsal was quite good, it was the first time I had meet Ian Page, Paul Robinson, Gary Page and Jel Lee and was to meet Dave Porter later on. I had seen Gary on drums and Jel on guitar at the Mersea Island gig supporting Small World. Their band was called Smithfield and it was the first and last time that I saw them. A few more Sundays go by and the Partners in Crime ( that’s what we are now called ( although I could think of a few other things )) just get better and better. By now the words “ THIS IS MY WORLD TODAY “ are well and truly set in my head.

A few more weeks go by and a few more Sundays too and lots of phone calls and Tony Feedback the founder member of Long Tall Shorty and almost life long friend rings, so I tell him all what is going on and asks me if I can get him some tickets for the Mods Mayday 99, so I give him Paul Robinson’s phone number. Two days later Tony calls me back and tells me that Long Tall Shorty are to play Mods Mayday 99 at the request of Glory Boys Music and could I play bass again and do I still see Derwent? Yes and yes was my answers. I had played in Long Tall Shorty between 1981-1985 on and off but I still loved the songs and had played in bands with both Tony and Derwent. Our first gig had been announced at the Colchester Arts Centre Dave Porter’ s Get Smarter club 5th of March 1999. Although it seem to be a very short set, it was about 1 hour long and a good night was had by all. I had now been introduced to Tony Clark and Warren Bright who seemed to have great enthusiasm about what we was all doing and in my view they are all round nice blokes.
On the Wednesday I meet up with Dave Cairns the guitar player/song writer of Secret Affair and we make our way over to Fender Guitars Head Office and I was Introduced to Jamie Compton who was their first drummer when they were called New Hearts. Jamie now works for Fender Guitars and his job is to find signed artists and get them to use Fender guitars. When Secret Affair split Dave whent to work for Gibson Guitars in the USA, and I can tell you between the two of them there is nothing they don’t know about guitars. After trying out hundreds of different bass guitars Dave and Jamie had all ready pick one out. One in every so many guitars built there will be one very special one that will play like no other guitar, and you guessed it that’s the Fender USA P Bass that I now play, what a guitar………

Tony Clark, Ian Page and me make arrangements to go down to Great Yarmouth Suffolk for the VFM and Tony Class Scooter Weekender. We made our way down to Yarmouth in the fog and with amazing luck the first Hotel we stop at the 3 wise kings found room at a inn and a big white star was in the sky and a load more bollocks ect..ect Honest, 3 rooms at this Hotel, opposite the Winter Gardens which on the other side of the road which was where we was going, so we phoned for a cab. As we waited in the bar Never Mind The Buzzcocks was on telly so Tony turned the volume up and I pointed out to everyone that Ian Page was on telly. I don’t think Ian has forgiven me yet. So over to the VFM do first as it was the nearest and the cab had now been cancelled. I spent most of the night queuing up at the bar buying the drinks which is how I became very drunk The next day on the way home I repeatedly spewed up all over Tony’s motor in rock n roll fashion and he was still nice about it.

The next day in the studios I looked like death warmed up, my eyes like road maps with a thumping head to match. The following weekend and a double rehearsal is booked first with Ian Page till 6pm then with Long Tall Shorty till 11pm. In the week Derwent phones me to say that he don’t want to do the Mods Mayday 99. I phoned Tony Feedback that Derwent is no longer available so that is how Chris White ( ex drummer of Mother Earth ) ended in the band. ( Derwent is the bloke in the red top who jumped up and sung with the Purple Hearts, he was also the lead singer with THE RAGE. More and more rehearsals and both bands sound great. Another gig is booked in Colchester this time at The Oliver Twist with Ian Page and his Partners in Crime and Long Tall Shorty supporting…This should be a laugh. Unadvertised it was supposed to be a live rehearsal for both bands and just a friends a family thing! That is what I was told. Chris White cant make the gig so we ask Paul Guidotti to stand in, “ No problem “ . 15 minuets into our set and Tony calls Chris Philpott ( Singer with Small World ) to the stage to sing Stepping Stone, Tony looks a bit worried. “Ian” he says “I don’t feel well” “Ok Tony it’s not a problem get yourself a beer and you will be alright” I said, only to find how wrong was to be. The Partners in Crime was a very good set, as tight as a frogs arse at 40 fathoms in fact! I phoned Tony Feedback every day to find out how he was but by Saturday May 1st Long Tall Shorty had to pull out of Mods Mayday 99. Long Tall Shorty R.I.P Unless Tony gets better…..I wish him well.

Saturday May 1st the day before the gig. 12pm and I am on the beer. 4pm pissed, 6pm cooking Whisky steaks 7.30pm absolutely out of it.8pm fast asleep on the sofa. 2.30am Sunday morning fell off the sofa, what happened? Its Mods Mayday 99 in a few hours from now I am going to be playing, none of my things are ready I cant go back to sleep “shit” it happens. 4.30am in the morning and I am restringing my guitars at 7am and I have pick up both my brothers who have offered to be my roadies for the day ( thankyou Allan & Tony for all your help ) We stop off at a café in Tottenham for something to eat but I don’t feel hungry, in fact for the first time ever I am beginning to get the shakes. We get to the Forum 9am. Friends begin to arrive, people who I have played in a band with sometime or another or bands that I have watched over the years. Lots of people ask my how Tony Feedback is and what illness he has caught? Ian Page Gary and Jel are in a café eating fried sandwiches, Small World are doing a sound check. The Circles arrive and I introduce myself to Mick Walker the singer/Rhythm guitar, I had spoke to Mike on the phone last week and they had offered to let Long Tall Shorty use their drums and amps because Chris White dose not have a drum kit and Tony hasn’t got a amp, (thanks guys for the offer) The Partners in Crime are up next for a sound check but they are still down the café.

12 o’clock and I'm back in the pub 1 beer is all I need and my nerves settle. I meet Mark and Lesley in The Bull & Gate they seemed to be at all the gigs and they are very nice people. 1pm and ROSCO take the stage, these 3 guys travelled all the way down from Leeds at short notice to replace Long Tall Shorty. If you missed them that was your loss because all the people I was with me included thought their set was great. I hope that they are still around to play a Mods Mayday 20 years from now. The Circle are next and I am so pleased I was there in the audience to enjoy this band and I hope I get to be on the same bill as them again. Top Gezzers The Killermeters are next and I am from the top of my voice singing “SX225” Small World turn it on and Chris Philpott gives it large and the audience are having a good time. 6.30pm and I have been called to the dressing room “Have you seen Colin” (our sax player ) ok we will go on with out him just then, “Sorry I am late but I could not get by the security guards they would not believe that I was the sax player even though I holding a sax in my hand”.

As we walk down the stairs to the stage our excitement builds we all have big smiles on our faces Ian just looks cool. DAVE PORTER (Very top Gezzer ( that’s why his name is in caps ACE MOD)) ride his very own scooter onto the stage hands a mike to Tony Clark (still being very nice) Introducing the band but is drown out by the applause and the chanting of “we are the Mods” “we are the Mods” We take the stage and we get a very warm welcome ( thank to all of you and you know who you are ) Ian says a quick hello and we are into My World note: us as a band love playing these songs, It was then followed by Shake and Shout, Going to a Go Go, Tracks of my Tears etc etc When we go to Time for Action, the crowd was going bananas I looked into the audience and could see my wife Rosalynn and my brothers wife dancing in the circle this was going to end to quick, and it did. 1 hour later our set was all over, I was knacked. I grabbed yet another beer and went upto the circle to watch The Cords And what a great band they still are. Buddy Ascott called rang me on Tuesday and I still cant get any free CD’s from him the most excellent drummer don’t you think! Purple Hearts was next by this time the day was beginning to take its toll on me. I meet up with Ian at the back bar and bought each other a few beers and was latter joined by my brother Allan then Gary and Jel, I got the chance to talk to a few people. I also had time to watch SQUIRE thank DAVE PORTER and say see you later to Paul Robinson.
