MOM'S APPLE PIE
banned record cover......or record hype?
After Terry Knight split The Pack and started managing the guys under the new name, Grand Funk Railroad, he also started getting into managing other bands. One of them was Mom's Apple Pie.
Without much of a record to promote, Terry came up with another way to get some attention for the 1972 release of their first album. He had N. Caruso come up with some compelling artwork. This homespun scene featured "mom" offering up a steaming, juicy pie with a slice revealing what appeared to be.... a .....oh you gotta see this..... hey guys! ..... it's a...... well....JUST LOOK!
The effect was electric. Throughout the nation, more people were looking at the record than actually listening to it. Some stores refused to stock the lurid cover. It was just the sort of attention Knight wanted for his new band.
Then to help notch things up a little, the artwork was replaced with a new cover where the rude bits were bricked over and barbed wire replaced the juice. Now it was nice. People immediately rushed out to find the "offensive" original cover.
To this day, more people know what the cover looks like rather than what the record sounds like. Even so, the album didn't sell well enough to make it into the charts and these days is a little tough to find. What does it sound like? Kinda like a big version of Grand Funk with heavy organ and a horn section.... which I guess makes them into Blood, Sweat & Tears.
