One of the most under-rated albums of 1965 == 50+ year old artifact!
The Lovin' Spoonful’s first four proper albums are their best. Their first album starts brilliantly in one of their finest moments with a title track that works its magic instantly. John Sebastian shows a remarkable mastery of blues and folk forms and a rare ability to write witty and vibrant NEW material within an idiom dogged by superfluous cover versions and reverential homage. There are a lot of very strong songs here that could have been developed into garage rock gems (My Gal, Wild About My Lovin'). Sebastian is the John Fogerty of 1965 and its strange how he was unable to consolidate and continue his writing in this style. America needed him and was desperately short of good home grown groups until 1967. Gradually John drifted further from rock and R&B influences towards melody rich pop-rock. Dogged by lousy production (like the Kinks) the Spoonful rarely sounded better as a group than on Night Owl Blues and Do You Believe in Magic in November 1965. The first Lovin' Spoonful albums showed such huge promise. Unlike, say, the Grateful Dead, who started as a jug band and then got weird, the Spoonful started as a jug band and switched to folk-pop-rock, but with the same sense of fun and sly jokes that were standard for any jug band. As such, they filled a gap between the cool folk-rock of the Byrds and the catchy pop of the radio friendly sixties. They deserve a lot more attention from rock history than they have received. Basically, the idea was that the Spoonful would do for jug band music what the Byrds were doing for Dylan and the Stones were doing for Chicago blues: use it as source material to create a pop sound that would be palatable to the white teen market. Not a masterpiece, but a solid debut, and one of the early landmarks of folk-rock.

The cover is solid all over flat and square with no split seams, no bends, no writing, no delete marks ...
The vinyl: Rated: "EX" (excellent) full of bright original shine, may be a couple little inner sleeve type scuffs, nothing significant so expect to play clean/enjoyable with no bothersome surface ...it's a 54 year old artifact! Both =MONO= Kama Sutra labels are clean.
