Record compoanies had all but phased out MONO records by the end of 1967 ...finding a MONO release after '67 is rare and special, yet here's proofr MONO existed after 1968, albeit RARE....
With a group named The Split Level, one would think psychedelic right away.
Yes & No, what you have here is a mixture of flower poprock with psychedelic observations. Virtually left off all list books of psychedelic pop, the glorious Split Level create all the nourishment your flower-power mind is hungry for. The group itself looks like 3 bank clerks and one hot mama kindergarten teacher, yet they somehow create strange vocal arrangements like the refrain to "You Can't Go". This track really stands out that fuses a cool melody of THE BEACH BOYS, FREE DESIGN, and SALT WATER TAFFY into one thick potion.
“Speculator” is a Gregorian chant on the greed of Wall Street, while “Equipment”
is a song about a folkie that turned into a rocker (“I remember when my life was so easy….
one guitar was all I had to carry… now I stumble over wires, leading to the amplifiers”)
the song features some nice electric sitar.
The Hagstrom guitars rock on “You Can’t Go” and “Can’t Complain” and a touch
of baroque on “Children Are Bored On Sunday”. They also pioneer “Electronic Rock” on the marvelous “Looking At The Rose Through World Colored Glasses”. Overall a very eclectic album that should please more than a few...here's a nice clean copy from 42 years ago...
