TERRIFIC SWINGING LONDON GROOVES FROM 1966
THE SMALL FACES
\ UK - DECCA - LK 4790 - MONO
Scarce, long gone 2ndpress on the UK red Decca label in glorious MONO which provides a bold punch in the production, much different from the stereo release and actually more suitable for the raunchy garage raves of the sixties...this issue has been hard to find for awhile, being from the original Decca label masters, it should serve quite well when considering the '66 first press commands $150 to $200 ...
THE SMALL FACES 1966 first album is tight, loud and hard rocking, rave up beat garage and punk. It’s obvious they were taking their cues from and competing with THE WHO primitive raves at the time. ‘Sha-La-La-La-Lee’ & ‘What´cha Gonna Do About It’ are very strong and enjoyable and this album sounds as if it were a fair representation of what they sounded like on stage at the time. I assure you, these guys know how to wail...as noted above, the album is filled with vibrant striking brash primal raves amid nice melodic song structures. 6 originals, 2 hits, 2 pop songs and covers of Shake and You Need Lovin' comprise the 12 tracks of this prime UK mod garage album. It did extremely well in the charts, reaching 3 with a long run. Months before the classic All or Nothing was released, it looks as though the Small Faces had already built up a strong following. You Need Lovin' should have been a single and perhaps would have given them the street credit they were never quite given their due of in the sixties. One of the heaviest tracks of 66, proto heavy rock and credited to Marriott-Lane on the sleeve. When Led Zeppelin ripped off both Willie Dixon and Marriott-Lane 3 years later they credited it to Page-Plant - shocking! Hard to believe but the 1966 version is heavier and has a better vocal! One Night Stand, What´cha Gonna Do About It, Own up Time, You Need Loving, Don´t Stop What You Are Doing, E to D and Sha-La-La-La-Lee are all garage nuggets with three minor classics...
