The RAW fuzzed-reverb twang guitar duo The Fendermen  known for their hit "Mule Skinner Blues" reaching number five on the Billboard charts a the break of the 60's.
The Fendermen consisted of Jim Sundquist and Phil Humphrey, two guys who shared the same birthday: November 26 1937. They first met at a school party 1957 but lost the contact short after. Some years later did Phil see Jim's name by accident when he drove his bread truck - and took contact again. They formed and  then as duo The Fendermen -- both playing Fender Telecaster guitars.
= cool =
Phil did the lead vocals and Jim played the lead guitar.

The mighty FENDERMEN started in the last year of the 50's. soon getting into contact with a music store owner who wanted to record the group and their song "Mule Skinner Blues".

This first recording had no immediate success or interest to radio station DJ's and the record seemed to be a dead project.

HOWEVER they reached the possibility to join a radio show in Wisconsin and play some songs live. With the help of the DJ playing their "Mule Skinner Blues" regularly for some time, the
FENDERMEN managed to sell 8000 copies in ONLY two days.

The Fendermen had problems with record distribution abilities due to overly high demand by the flourishing teen-scene sixties. For several months the pair tried the hands-on approach to promoting their record.
“We had a trunk full of our record and nobody would buy them,” he said.   “We had given up on it totally.”

Enter Wisconsin DJ Lindy Shannon who played the track constantly and into the area’s top 10.

Taking notice were Amos and Dan Heilicher at Soma Records (that’s Amos spelt backwards).

The Heilicher brothers had the boys re-record the raucous rocker at Vernon Bank’s Kay Bank Studio in
Minneapolis–the same locale where DAVE DUDLEY wailed his “Six Days On The Road”
and the Trashmen later jammed-out their “Surfin’ Bird.”

Despite signing with Soma, The Fendermen were paid by their label
the costs of making their MULE SKINNER BLUES record.

Soma contracts stated that for only $295 an artist who could record two
tunes, and have them issued on Soma, then receive 350 45's, with a further 150 records going to radio station disc jockey's

THE FENDERMEN

sales were phenomenal–within weeks, the public seemed wild about mules.
The tune, a bodacious boast about handling a mule, featured Jim and Phil’s delirious whooping and their crackling guitars.  The record
rocked, and no one seemed to question just why these boys were so whipped up about a mule.

The Fendermen, with Johnny Hauser on drums and Den Dale on bass, toured as an opening act for Johnny  Cash and  Johnny  Horton.   Their first big show was in Minneapolis ... “When we walked out on stage,” said Jim, “all that  applause just hit us–10, maybe 20,000 people
remaining the biggest thrill of my life.”
The FENDERMEN even had appearances on “American Bandstand,” plus "the Grand Ole Opry."
