Description
Record Label: Elektra Records EKL 4024 MONO
Date: 1968
Format: LP, the last Doors album (and the last Elektra album) produced in MONO, in a very limited edition compared to the Stereo version. MONO copies often sell for over $400 - $500 in mint condition.
Review: The third, best selling, and highest Billboard charting Doors studio album.
Their 2nd #1 hit "Hello, I Love You (, Won't You Tell Me Your Name?)" is on this LP.
This was one of their six original Morrison-authored songs on their Aura acetate demo before Robby Krieger joined the group (replacing Ray’s two brothers), as was "Summer’s Almost Gone" on this LP also. Three of the other demos were on their two earlier LPs - "End Of The Night" appeared on their debut eponymous LP, and both "Moonlight Drive" and "My Eyes Have Seen You" were on their 2nd LP "Strange Days". The sixth demo cut, "Go Insane", finally appeared on their later live double LP album "Absolutely Live" as part of Morrison’s performance poem "The Celebration of the Lizard" that he wanted to be on this record, but had to settle for just the "Not To Touch The Earth" section of the Celebration piece. However, compromise yielded the consolation gatefold UNIPAK cover with the full lyrics of the ‘Theatre Composition’ Celebration poem facing the "TCotL" lizard pictured opposite inside.
The album title did not have a matching song track on this record; however, two albums later Doors fans were delighted to hear the song "Waiting For The Sun" on the LP "Morrison Hotel" – it was worth waiting for...!
Grading: cover/disc – VG+/VG+
Cover: Some very minor edge wear (mostly at corners), very slight spine wear with 1/4" scrape (EKL 4024 on left, DOORS/WAITING For The Sun at center, and Elektra on right are all OK). Front cover is virtually flawless except for a minor rubbing vertical line 1/4" from the spine that runs from Densmore's right sleeve cuff up to the "d" of "doors"; there is also very faint minor rubbing around the
EKL 4024 .
The back cover is OK inside & out, with very slight top-only ring wear, and 4 slight 1/4" to 1/2" faint creases near the spine, and a 1/2" faint crease from the top edge to the 2nd "O" of
MONO .

Vinyl: Both sides are shiny with near full luster and no appreciable scratches. Under a bright light, both sides have very minor paper scuffs that should not affect play. See pictures (to be posted soon) - I tried to get maximum light reflection to show off "clean" surfaces, so odd circular reflections around label are from candelabra above. I will also post the results of my play grading from a critical audition on my hi-end audio system in the very near future before the auction ends.
Label: Clean brown or tan paper labels with large stylized "E" - very minor spindle lines near hole on both sides. See pictures – hardly noticeable.

On Feb-04-07 at 02:22:00 PST, seller added the following information:The results of my play grading from a critical audition on my hi-end audio system through AKG K101 Headphones:
VG to VG+ as per my visual grade under bright light. Overall a pleasant listen with no skips, very faint crackling in the bands between tracks and in some of the quieter passages less noticeable on Side Two. Exceptions follow:
- Side One:
- Track 1 Hello, I Love You - a tiny spec on the beginning grooves produces very faint pops for about 5 revolutions - buyer might be able to use a solvent to remove it.
- Track 5 Wintertime Love - a faint surface scratch (I missed visually at first) causes very soft pops through the 1st half of the song.
- Side Two:
- In the band after Track 3 We Could Be So Good Together - a really faint tick carries through into the intro of
- Track 4 Yes, The River Knows for a few revs, but I can't see it!
