Purveyors of some of the finest doom around, Sweden's Monolord return with their sixth album and, as its title suggests, the band's ability to farm hypnotic riffs and grind out colossal grooves is, so far at least, never-ending.
The band's riffs remain their defining characteristic: relentless and repetitive, to try and resist them is a futile exercise. Sylvia Massy's production refines Monolord's approach into a sleek, rumbling machine. Less raw this time around, Neverending feels precision-engineered to drill its way into hearts and minds. 'Oozing Wound' calls on the likes of Black Sabbath and Kyuss for inspiration, but stands on its own two feet, detailing the feeling of being trapped in a toxic relationship and marrying it to an all-consuming sense of repetition. 'You Bastard' juxtaposes a grinding angry riff with a chorus that borders on the emotionally uplifting. It seeks to highlight both the experience of those with suicidal thoughts and those left behind, and does so with remarkable care. It's rare for a band to create a defining work six albums into a career, but with vocalist Thomas Jager's more personal and introspective approach, these songs have a real impact that goes beyond the power of the riff.
