By the late 90s, Monster Magnet had well pushed stoner rock to write an expansive nad psychedelic letter, but Powertrip tightened the envelope into one more transmissible. Written mostly by Dave Wyndorf during a solitary stretch in Las Vegas, we hear characteristic sleaze, excess, bright lights and a hollow centre, riffs landing harder and clearer than earlier work. 'Space Lord' carries the crossover moment, but elsewhere the record balances swagger with density, keeping the fuzz and cosmic imagery intact while trimming the jams into more direct forms.
