Another from my personal collection of 50,000 UK Lp records that I have accumulated  over a period of more than 45 years. I purchased this from new. This would be a 1969 release of the Moodie Blues Debut album featuring the Boxed Decca Labels in mono. The album would have initially been played to record to tape and then stored in a case with the vinyl removed from the sleeve and cover for protection. This is how I have always stored my records. The vinyl features the original earliest mono mix of this album look at the earliest "1" to "1" mother stampers featured on this vinyl and early -1a -2a matrix endings. The vinyl is like new in my opinion and it is hard for me to even see a blemish on the playing surface, importantly there are no scratches or marks that would cause any clicks or pops during the play. I have played the vinyl at very loud volume on a top system using a dedicated mono cartridge. The audio is stunningly vibrant and clear and plays through near mint audio quality in my opinion. This is complete with the original Robert Stace laminated front only cover and original Decca mono poly sleeve also in exceptional condition for a 45 year old record. Rare and collectable especially in this condition!



The Magnificent Moodies is the 1965 debut album by The Moody Blues first released in the UK and the first and only album featuring their R&B lineup of guitarist Denny Laine, bassist Clint Warwick, keyboardist Mike Pinder, flautist–percussionist Ray Thomas, and drummer Graeme Edge. Lead vocals were shared by Laine and Thomas. The album is a collection of R&B and Merseybeat type songs, including the cover of "Go Now", produced by Alex Wharton, that had been a Number 1 hit single earlier that year.




The album did not make the Record Retailer/Music Week chart even though it reached number 5 in August 1965 in the New Musical Express album chart. The US album did not make the Billboard chart.





Laine and Warwick left the group in 1966, and were replaced by guitarist Justin Hayward and bassist John Lodge respectively.




In 1985 Intermediate Records reissued the album on vinyl and cassette as Go Now with a mixture of songs from the original UK and US LPs plus songs that would eventually end up as bonus tracks on the CD issues. Decca Records UK first issued The Magnificent Moodies on CD in 1988 with 13 bonus tracks, with mastering by Anthony Hawkins. Repertoire Records issued an abridged version of the CD in the 1990s with only seven bonus tracks. In 2006, the CD was reissued again, this time with 14 bonus tracks including the rare "People Gotta Go" not found on the original 1988 Decca version. The CD also boasts for the first time a speed-corrected and undistorted version of "Go Now".




The 2006 Repertoire CD was remastered by Eroc (Joachim Ehrig), who was the leader of the 1970s German rock band Grobschnitt.




Eroc described the project, at stevehoffman.tv, as follows:
"When I got the job for the "Magnificent Moodies" from REP some time ago I also got the order to try to get the intro of "Go Now" better. So I sat down and analysed the distortion and then restored the waveforms very carefully. This can be done by "drawing" out each single harsh peak by hand. It took me some days but I wanted to find out, what can be done in general. The result is for the first time ever a much more natural sounding intro which also is pitched correctly.
I see this as an alternative for all those who always were bothered by that harsh "electric" piano-sound. I think many of them will like the new alternative and I myself prefer it a lot compared to the "technical distroyed [sic]" original. Others may hate it because it differs from the version they got used to over the decades. But in each case it's worth a qualified discussion."

The Vinyl

This is the original thicker , heavier chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest original pressings! (Later press are much more flimsier and less robust)!

The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free of any warps. The vinyl has retained its original sheen from new in my opinion on initial inspection this looks like it has obviously not been played that much at all in fact it looks barely played no more than two or three times  in my opinion! On close inspection any marks that could possibly be seen would be very light sleeve removal only but importantly no audio sounding marks or needle marks that would cause any clicks or pops that I heard at all! (Too be honest I find it hard to even see a blemish at all)

The audio quality

I have played this track for track at very loud volume prior to listing at very loud volume, importantly using a dedicated mono cartridge! From the moment that the needle hits the playing surface , it is obvious that this vinyl not only visually but audibly has only had very very minimal play only! The audio is stunning cristal clear and vibrant, very bright and clear throughout without any signs of distortion from being over played at all and plays with a lovely deep bassey feel only found like this on early pressings! I would grade the audio at least excellent plus  to near as mint in my opinion! (I don't think that you will find better very rich and vibrant through out)

Please note! I always add this disclaimer! Please allow for isolated static  minor background in between tracks only, and not consistant through out the audio. Please remember that this is a genuine 45 year old record that would have originally been played on a 45 year old system.

The Labels

These are the original Decca (Boxed) labels 1969  The J.T tax code can just roughly be made out (Only Earliest 1969 press see photos)  The labels are rich in colour and are very clean no minor rubbing ware to mention! In fact the labels are like new in my opinion! all text is fully readable. It is obvious to me that this vinyl has only had barely been played I actually find it hard to see any spider marks around the spindle hole,   the spindle hole is free of any  ware and of course is perfectly round!

The Record Sleeve

This is the original Red White Decca Mono poly lined sleeve no splits or tares just light creasing with age.

The Cover

This Is The Original 1st issue Laminated front only Robert Stace cover in absolutely stunning condition through out! No splits or tares.  All text is readable! There is just very light top left corner crease to mention  and very minor and small wyspy type creases in the laminate at the edges & near spine only noticed if looked for  can just be seen in photos but not really noticed unless looked for in my opinion. No nasty ringware that is normally seen on these! The cover has always been seperated from the vinyl and sleeve since purchased from new! The rear is also lovely and clean with slightest fading with age only, no nasty names written. Light creases are barely noticed unless looked for  no ringware or nasty grubbyness! Unbeleivably rare like this! Graded at excellent plus in my opinion!
