Label/Format: Threshold – Lilac and white format.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, snowy white and highly attractive with just light to light+ spindle marks. The earliest first pressed copies of this classic album are seldom seen much better.

Cat Number: THS 5.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams, considerably heavier than subsequent pressings. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarcer and more elusive than most of the other stereo titles when found as a -1W/-1W original. Certainly harder to find with lovely, little worn covers and including the lyric/graphic insert too.

Musicians: Justin Hayward – vocals, guitar, sitar; John Lodge – vocals, bass; Ray Thomas – vocals, flute, tambourine; Graeme Edge – electric and acoustic drums; Mike Pinder – vocals, synthesizer, mellotron, harpsichord, organ.

Brief Info: The magnificent sixth album by the Moody Blues, again featuring truly beautiful cover artwork. An album with a more ‘progressive’ feel and the level of musicianship rises again still further. This album was the last to feature the mellotron, it was replaced by the Chamberlin (a device that uses recorded tape to generate sound) on the 1972 album Seventh Sojourn. Lovely sound and a solid Threshold pressing – a subsidiary of Decca Records – you would expect little else. For me, one of the greatest British bands ever, every album they made up to ‘Sojourn’ is a classic and their popularity was fully justified, every good boy deserves a copy of all their albums, all are equally essential.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: this is a delicate and fragile cover but when seen at somewhere near its best, it’s a thing of great beauty. This does however wear badly if ill-treated or abused and more often seen faded, rubbed, heavily ringworn and sometimes even torn.

Cover Grade and Format: A lovely cover with breathtaking artwork and happy to grade this one full Excellent. An unlaminated gatefold format with the front and back including finely textured surfaces and made with a very soft and fairly thin card – all the ingredients for damage and wear. This was printed and made in England by Robert Stace and includes the original lyric-picture insert.

Cover Front: One of the classic covers within the ‘progressive’ genre and this front does it near full justice. This is clean, fresh and unfaded with barely any noteworthy creases. Any present are ultra fine and faint and near the edges. Any minor rubbing is confined to the very edges also, the main face looks fantastic and the lack of speckle to the texturing is good news too.

Cover Back: The back is largely similar again with just a faint trace of rubbing near the right edge and light rim impression with faint rub near the central areas of each edge. Almost the lightest possible traces of ringwear, but given to what most are seen like, this indeed is very faint indeed, again the lack of creasing a real bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This has a smooth finish and looks superb, totally wear-free with lovely rich and colourful artwork.

Top Edges: Very faint patchy rub traces only, a little more near the back right corner.

Bottom Edges: Light to light+ patchy rubbing, being soft card on the resting edge, few will ever avoid it.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal traces of wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this back edge.

Spine and Text: An exceptional spine for one so fragile. A splendid, and very delicate spine that is also textured. Solid and thick, straight with no compression and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and there is little more than the odd light rub trace on the very ends.

Corners: Any rubbing on the spine pair light and faint. More tip rubbing on the right sets but still very modest for this one. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: I simply adore this cover, an inspired work by Phil Travers and this is one to view not hide away. Never underestimate how difficult this one is to find even in excellent condition. This sleeve with so little overall wear and freshness is a thing of beauty and most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner: The original blue lined Decca type that has ‘UK Patents Applications No’ text and is date coded 6-71. The lining firmly in place and solid with a neat clear window. Little creasing or ruffling. All edges are rock solid and unstressed with little ageing. Some glue darkening on the seams only, this heavyweight inner will also prove hard to find much better.

The Insert: EX+ Clean with sharp edges and no major marks. One semi crease on a corner and odd minor thumb crease trace. This looks little handled and includes all the song’s lyrics. So often missing or tatty looking, this is a fine example.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: At or very near Excellent, any surface marks on this are fine, few and have no effect on the fine sound. A splendid visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A quality Decca pressing, a record company that rarely failed to please with immaculate pressings. Any record looking this good, this age, is okay by me and the sound is impressive. A copy modestly played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful album plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Like the early Deram albums, this is a wonderful, top quality pressing and sounds magnificent. An album that does have some quiet passages, any surface sound was only (just) noted near the very end of side two, this being very faint and gentle indeed. Fast approaching forty, this being a very early copy indeed too, few will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played sparingly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Barely anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this timeless classic, I can hardly get enough of this band and they are regularly played at home and in my car. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: I never tire of listening to the magnificent Moodies, and have been playing their music via different sources for many years. Ahead of their time for high-end hi-fi sound and sound imagery – whether via a mono or stereo source. This album is up there with their very best and nice to offer a -1P/-1P original as most are later ones.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
