What we have here technically DOES NOT EXIST and is not supposed to exist. To our best knowledge, the existence of this PROMO-ONLY mono version of this great psychedelic cult classic has never been documented or substantiated, and none of the price books and guides currently in print make any reference to its history or background. The historical importance of this item cannot be overestimated: this is an equivalent of discovering a long-lost animal- or plant species!!!

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

In this case, though, this is a rather moot point, since this rare promo-only version of the album was never commercially released to begin with.

The bidders should note that this album contains mono mixes which are considerably different: much more raw and "punchy" than the common, commercially available stereo mixes.

Moon's first album is one of those undiscovered late-'60s psychedelic pop masterpieces which command a high price from LP collectors (like their second album, this one has not been made available on compact disc). Moon Without Earth was produced by keyboard player/guitarist/vocalist Matthew Moore and drummer Larry Brown (ex-Sidewalk Productions sideman) at Continental Recorders -- formerly on Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood, CA -- where the band reportedly lived for a time. Moore -- who wrote most of the material here -- sings most of the lead vocals, while David Marks (ex-Beach Boys) provides lead guitar and sings background vocals. "Brother Lou's Love Colony" and "She's on My Mind" were written by Gary Montgomery and Jack Dalton, both members of Colours, who at the same time were recording their own 1968 self-titled debut album for Dot. These two groups are in fact quite similar stylistically in that they both were influenced by the Beatles and early Bee Gees' recordings of the same period, focusing on buoyant mid-tempo melodies and heavily produced piano-guitar instrumentation with a McCartney-esque progressive pop feel. Some of the songs here are orchestrated (strings and/or horns) and arranged by Bob Klimes, who also worked with Colours, the Association, and Denny Brooks. "Mothers and Fathers" and "Faces" were released as singles, but neither song charted.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Promo-only mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 40:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Minor water stain noted along the opening side (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); (less than 1/ ½ square inch in size)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side).

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
