I cannot believe that MOON OF STEEL has been around for 15 years. I am literally hanging my head in shame because until this last year I never knew they existed. My only excuse (not a very good one) is that I usually shy away from a lot of Progressive Metal and bands that tend to try and implement everything they ever learned in theory class into one song and then repeat the motions as if you were too musical inept to notice.
MOS definitely do not fall into that typical Progressive theme; throughout this entire CD, there are no rhymes without reason and everything blends together with great ease and melody. The compositions are outstanding from almost every perspective; not only is the music intelligent but it's overflowing with emotion and feeling as well. Being an advocate of the old school, I especially like the production and mood of the album. The guitar work is insane! Vic De Lamare and J.J Angel are virtual masters; full on fret action without fillers and enough changes to keep things interesting. Everything done here is has a purpose; it is really hard to make note of any standouts as all the tracks are top notch.
"Shy Girl" is especially harmonic and rich with haunting melodies and has a bit of a different flavour than the rest of the album. I was, however, slightly dis-enchanted by the instrumental track "The Moon". It could have been a little longer and more involved; as it is, it seems more like an intro to "Times Marching Fast" (which by the way, has an over the top solo). The vocals are very pleasing, high-end range driven and very distinct (think Midnight or early Geoff Tate). I haven't had a chance to check out their later releases with Sarah Bonetti on vocals but I am sure all their releases are high quality.
Although, because this is their debut it may be the best one and a good album to start with if you plan to check these guys out. In short, MOS builds you a house of delicately constructed notes and guides you through each room of thought with graceful aggression. A class Metal act! Highly recommended! (Online February 2, 2002)
