Trumpeter Lee Morgan never heard The Procrastinator in its final form. Released six years after his death, the 1978 double LP was the first in a run of posthumous Blue Note excavations drawn from unreleased sessions. This one drew on three sessions recorded at Van Gelder Studio in July 1967, then twice in late 1969, and charted the tail end of Morgan's eight-year run with Wayne Shorter. The 1967 material, cut with Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins, sets the tone: limber, sharp, groove-heavy. Tracks like 'Party Time' hint at Horace Silver's influence, while 'Dear Sir' and 'Rio' reflect Shorter's more exploratory side. First issued as a US double vinyl, it was later split across Japanese LPs and Blue Note CD reissues, including a 1995 disc with just the 1967 session.
