Description
THE COMPLETE BLUE NOTE LP RECORDINGS OF SIDNEY BECHET. MOSAIC RECORDS – OUT OF PRINT. DISCS – APPEAR UNPLAYED. BOX – VG. One box set for a total of 6 vinyl records. Hand-numbered edition 3,238 of a total of 7,500 copies of this set printed worldwide. Sidney Bechet was perhaps the earliest outstanding jazz soloist. Though he began as a clarinetist and played that instrument to some extent throughout his entire life, he was the first true master of the saxophone in jazz, and the greatest of all New Orleans reed players. Once the 12” record finally came of age, only he and George Lewis were among the many traditional jazz artists that Blue Note re-released under the new format. These tracks are presented in original chronological order, encompassing Bechet’s output for the Blue Note record label from between 1939 and 1953. Under the supervision of producer, writer and critic Michael Cuscuna, all original Blue Note discs have been washed and retransferred, resulting in a “truer, more accurate sound than any previous reissue.” Alternate takes are included, and careful attention was paid to create a complete snapshot of all of Bechet’s output on the great Blue Note record label. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl. This box set comes with a perfectly preserved 17-page booklet featuring several archival photographs, including essays and interviews with Michael Cuscuna, Art Hodes, John Chilton, and Max Harrison. Includes recording locations and dates, personnel, and master prefix session numbers. Sidemen on these discs include: Big Sid Catlett, J.C. Higgenbotham, Pops Foster, Art Hodes, Bunk Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, Wild Bill Davison, Walter Page, Fred Moore, Slick Jones, Jonah Jones, and others. The only flaws on this set are slight wear marks at the outer edges of the front (see photo). Bechet was the first musician to have a personal, conceptual, and prosperous impact on Blue Note records. This box set is a vivid snapshot of an important period in the history of American Jazz and would be a prize in the catalog of any serious Jazz collector. Thank you for viewing this auction.
