If you're into Pearl Jam' classic album Ten, then you'll find Mother Love Bone's 1990 debut album Apple is cut from a very similar cloth. The character of the late, great frontman in Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood, differs from that of Eddie Vedder, but the instrumentation is similar because it's largely the same band: Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were the guitarist and bassist in Mother Love Bone. The single 'Stardog Champion' has a bit of Jane's Addiction feel vocally and veers closer to classic rock than Pearl Jam but the riffs are very familiar. 'This Is Shangrila' is similarly anthemic and life affirming, which contrast to the gloomy rain-filled air we associate with Seattle where they're from. They sound suited and booted for sunset boulevard and that confidence is an empowering feeling to tap into.
