Full Gloss Vinyl is exceptionally clean. SIDE 1 is NEAR MINT with no marks. SIDE 2 is EXCELLENT with a very few faint surface marks, viewed under hard bright light, that are inaudible. PLAY TESTED: only a tiny tic at very beginning of side 2 (gone within a couple of revolutions). The rest of this side plays superb, like Side 1, without any noticeable background sound. Super clean labels both sides.

Released May 26, 1967, The 2nd Mothers album ABSOLUTELY FREE, followed fast upon the heels of Freak Out!, Zappa's 1966 debut with the Mothers of Invention, and precedes 1968's We're Only in It for the Money; between the three of them, we arguably have his artistic zenith. Absolutely Free is a continuation of the weird freakiness--both in sounds and concepts--introduced on Freak Out! "Plastic People" and "America Drinks & Goes Home" continue ZAPPA's lampooning of Middle American values, while this time out, he also seems obsessed with the fruits and vegetables that "keep you regular" ("The Duke of Prunes", the delightfully ridiculous "Call Any Vegetable"). The music here jumps from avant-garde jazz snippets to gritty garage rock to psych frenzy to near-operatic vocals in a manner that was truly innovative at the time; in fact, it often sounded like true musical insanity.
Actually, Side 1, after the scathing opening statement of PLASTIC PEOPLE, plays like a continuous, though incredibly diverse, suite, with each part following on the next without a break, a chance to breathe or gather the senses. Once you're in, you're in for the whole ride. The highlight of Side 1 is undoubtedly the nearly 7 minute long "Invocation & Ritual Dance Of The Young Pumpkin". This is the piece that initially hipped folks to just how musically accomplished and brilliant Zappa was as a composer, above and beyond all the other craziness. Moog and Keyboard player, DON PRESTON, probably the single most brilliant musician to ever wear the Mothers apron, also has a huge part in the high level of quality and structural genius throughout. Though we never heard Frank give any credit to these early Mothers, they - particularly Preston, were a huge part of the overall sound. 

The definitive highlight here, though, has to be Side 2's "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" the seven-and-a-half minute mini-operetta tour-de-force that initially roasts America's straight suburban culture before peeking through the curtains at the repressed sexual perversions hiding underneath that same culture. With its 13-year-old "Teenage Queen" ("who's rockin' and rollin' and acting obscene"), the Lolita-like obsession of the brown-shoed gentleman in the title, the track was a precursor to the naughty sexual irony later found in so many Zappa tracks -- themes that would become as much Zappa's artistic stock in trade through the decades as his incisive, cutting wit, biting social commentary, hellacious guitar playing and incredibly sophisticated musical vision.
