Mountain Goats are a Californian indie outfit fronted by John Darnielle and this, which is something like their 23rd studio album, said to emerge from a dream on May 29, 2023, its title a whispered guide into music yet unformed. At the piano, the dream became a work and unfolded in tracks that mirror its strange, fluid logic. Dedicated to longtime bassist Peter Hughes, who "bid farewell to the sea" in 2024, the album is homage and meditation, so it carries warmth of memory and quiet a reverence, but also moments of intense texture and dense walls of drums, melody and slashing guitar.
