Brief Info: The debut album, and one of only two this superb folk-rock band made in the early 1970s. Comparisons often made with early Steeleye Span and Sandy Denny’s Fotheringay, but Mr. Fox wrote all their own material and used an array of different instruments that gave them their own sound. Also using more complex sounds and arrangements, than many in similar bands of the era, this is a folk-rock gem. Documented as being unpredictable live – sometimes inspired and brilliant – and sometimes lacklustre – but there is nothing lacklustre about this terrific recording. An album very well received on issue, apparently Melody Maker awarded it ‘Album of the Year’ in 1970. However, finding originals is quite difficult especially in such find condition. It was followed by ‘The Gypsy’ which proved to be their last, but even with a relatively short career, Mr. Fox were a highly significant and important part of the rising folk-rock era. Carole Pegg’s vocals are superb throughout and the songs strong. For those still unfamiliar with Mr. Fox, this merits strong recommendation.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single unlaminated format and very prone to wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and including its plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: In terms of this unforgiving cover, that is rarely seen without often heavy wear, this one has fared quite well. A little wear around the edges and corner tips, but hardly anything to the main area which still looks very impressive. Ultra faint rim impression with only a trace of wear there, but little else. This front will take a lot of beating.

Cover Back: The back has the odd crease and more rim impression with gentle rubbing, meaning light ringwear which this one will rarely avoid totally. Again, a little rubbing round the edges, also a very small top edge central split of only a few millimetres. This the main reason for the somewhat cautious grading. Being honest, I consider this back to still be of fine quality as I know for sure, this more often than not, is seen in very poor states these days. Silver-grey ink simply refuses to wear well over time.

Top Edge: Thin but straight with minimal patchy, light rubbing. As stated above, a small central movement split.

Bottom Edge: Moderate+ consistent rubbing, no real surprise on this storage edge. Still straight withj no splits.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with a little compression. Most text is unworn with just a little letter clipping on the band/title on the central area.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with near fine shape mostly retained.

Cover Summary: With most of any wear the edges, this is still a fine looking cover. To say this is a difficult one is something of an understatement, these are hard to find in any condition being honest, let alone top graders. With a super front and little-worn back, this still sets a high standard. But not for the cover perfectionists, but many will enjoy it for sure.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain solid white unlined inner in the typical Transatlantic style. Barely worn or creased at all with all edges unsplit with no repairs. Just gentle patchy traces of seam adhesive darkening that most all of these will have as a bare minimum.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. The cover may have a little wear, but the record is fantastic. A super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light – hardly any really – this an exceptional example and very well pressed as well. Visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality folk-rock gem plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Pressed by EMI, and quality being more assured, especially with the prized 1 G & 1 R mother and stamper codes. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. The odd sporadic tick withstanding, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first one of these for years. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better, the record especially so, and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
