MTUME – Alkebu-Lan: Land of the Blacks (1972) Strata-East-1972-4 – VG/M-/M- (cover/vinyl)
This is one of the deepest, most potent, mystical black power jazz recordings you’ll ever hear. It’s angry. It’s hard. It’s funky. It’s spiritual. It’s PHENOMENAL. The line-up is absolutely incredible let by percussionist Mtume with Carlos Garnett, Leroy Jenkins, Ddugu, Gary Bartz, Stanley Cowell, Buster Williams, Andy Bey, Joe Lee Wilson, Billy Hart, Eddie Micheaux, Yusef Iman and Weusi Kuumba. Across two LPs, the tracks are “Invocation,” “Baba Hengates,” “Utamu,” “Saud,” “Alkebu-Lan,” “No Words,” “Separate Not Equal,” and “Sifa (The Prayer).” This is a super rare one on the super collectible Strata-East Records label, and it is a pretty damn majestic album to behold and to hear. Killer cover art and custom labels too! Wow!
This is a beautiful copy with the noted defects. The gatefold cover actually has very little wear to the art, however there is some slight water damage along the bottom seam of both pockets, causing the slick to be damaged and both bottom seams to split all the way across. The second top seam has a 2-inch seam split from the jacket opening in. Otherwise, there is only the slightest hint of wear here – visually, aside from the very bottom of the cover, this is beautiful to look at and easy to read. Also – I have owned about three copies of this over the years, and every copy I have owned has had this cover damage along the bottom – this one is the best of the three having the least damage. (Just something interesting to note!) As to the 2-LPs, they are absolutely beautiful and glossy and clean and look unplayed – maybe a whisper of a sleeve scuff that is super faint, but maybe not – these are gorgeous vinyl disks!. I grade this conservatively: VG/M-/M- (cover/vinyl).
This is an original pressing. I do not sell modern reissues
A NOTE ABOUT MY DESCRIPTIONS: The appreciation of music is a relative thing. The descriptions I write about albums and music is purely my own opinion. Yours may be different. Please don’t rely solely upon my description as your gospel. There is an abundance of information online about pretty much every album ever recorded. Please do additional online research about an album’s musical style if you are unsure. Also, I take many photos of every album I sell, so please look at all of them to confirm my grading – it is all visual. I have been collecting and selling records for 30+ years, so I do have some experience. The majority of what I’m selling now comes from my personal collection as I am downsizing what I have accumulated.
