Condition (Cover / Record): M-/VG+ (cover is fine, disc has pressing haze, but generally plays quietly, especially for a Folkways LP, label has sticker stains on one side) includes printed 8-page booklet of texts and photos, which is near mint, but for a small sticker stain and library stamp on the front

Description: This is an overall nice copy of an early documentary LP issued by Folkways, which features a recording of a ceremonial psychedelic experience by Mazatec Indians in the Oaxaca region of southern Mexico.

Additional Info: Leave it to Folkways to have issued a recording of a drug experience in the late 50's, a particularly strange and repressive period of American history. This recording, made by Gordon Wasson in 1956, attempts to chronicle a religious ceremony involving the ingestation of psychedelic mushrooms by Indians who are attempting to communicate with the Divine Spirit. Lots of wild, hallucinatory chanting and the like, which might even appeal to fans of phonetic sound poems or dadaist utterings. When possible, the text of the chants is translated in the booklet. Another unusual historical document that only Folkways would have released.
