A lost classic

Music Emporium is a psychedelic concoction of quasi-ominous material dominated by loud, acid-flavored organ. The group’s style drew from heavy bands of the time like Iron Butterfly and The Doors. The musical/lyrical content is a yin-yang mix, mostly somber or eerie stuff and some lighthearted songs. Both the sensitive and the deep, darker sides of the songwriter are exuded. All of it could best be called a portentous contrivance.

The playing is above par from all of the band members. Bill was actually a master accordionist, having won a national championship. So, he merely transferred his skills from one keyboard to another. He was able to generate a full sound reminiscent of a transistor organ or a pipe organ. It could be big and powerful on tracks like “Cage” or the elegiac “Days of Wrath”, or mellow like on “Gentle Thursday”. (According to the CD notes, it wasn’t a Farfisa, but a cheap model GEM. Somehow, the lead vocalist/organist, Bill Cosby, could get a sensuous and robust sound out of it. Btw, yes that’s his real name). His girlfriend at the time, Carolyn Lee, was the bassist and backing vocalist. She also sung lead on two of the songs, and beautifully I might add. Her yearning vocal on “Gentle Thursday” is lovely. Dave Padwin is the guitarist, who performs perfectly in tune with everyone else. He showcases his work on “Sun Never Shines”, a song with a Foxy Lady type of beat. Dora Wahl’s drumming is certainly a highlight as well, inspired by Ginger Baker’s rhythms and pounding style.

Last but not least, I want to mention the album cover. The colorful and slightly humorous cover art speaks for itself. It tells you to expect something psychedelic and unusual, true, but it doesn’t reflect the morbid nature of the songs.

The production is quite good to boot; everything is clear and smooth, done originally in stereo.
