Description
This is the original 45rpm boxed 3-record album set which was also released, either previously or simultaneously, as three ten-inch 78s. Actually, I'm pretty sure the 10" was released in 1947 and these 45s a few years later. In either case, this was the first theremin music ever released as an album, although the six tracks also include vocals and orchestration. The theremin, an electronic instrument controlled by the motions of hands waved about in its vicinity (somewhat like the Wii), had already been used in a few movie soundtracks, but it wouldn't really take off until the 1960s when it was repopularized by groups such as Led Zeppelin and The Moody Blues.
This original set is not only complete but it is nearly immaculate. I'm guessing that it has never been played. Harry Revel created the basic idea and themes, with Leslie Baxter doing the arrangement and conducting, while Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman provided the requisite artistry at the theremin necessary to pull it all together. Hoffman's brilliant technique was also heard in the soundtracks of "Spellbound," "Lost Weekend," "Spiral Staircase," and "The Red House." The lady on the cover is Virginia Clark (OMG!
