 THE AUTOMATICS.Along with Underhand, this was one of the first 2 true MP bands. The first record, All the Kids..., was reviewed in MRR as "sounds like kids trying to make a hit record in their garage," which is spot-on perfect. An equal joint-partnership between Bassist Jesse Kimball and Guitarist Jesse Sutherland (later of THE EPOXIES, who were fronted by Jesse K's ex-live in girlfriend, photographer Meredith DeLoca). Both were Ramones-loving punk rockers throughout the 1980s. The basic idea of the band was SHORT SONGS, so that "by the time people figured out they didn't like one song, we'd be on to the next," as my friend JK told me. Lyrical retards in the best way, think Ramones, MRR said of one release that "The Automatics make The Queers sound like Shakespeare." In their earliest phase, the Autos were very much in the vein of the Queers -- very poppy, not afraid of harmonies, tuneful, ballsy, gritty, and a little bit sloppy. They consciously tried to write underground pop hits, were goofy enough to record a song in Finnish (with horns!), and loved to tour and play basement shows in front of 10 people who really cared. Later left MP for my friend Jason Duncan's label, Just Add Water Records, because they were tending to the garage punk end of the spectrum and wanted to distance themselves from pop punk.--T. MP-38 -- THE WANNABES. (Just coming back into print). James Farris from Moral Crux sent them my way. Post-SW pop-punk with big hooks and a little harmony. This is the sort of band that Lookout SHOULD have been putting out... I paid for their first full-length recording and then they promptly flipped it to Ben Weasel's ephemeral label, distributed by Lookout -- so they wound up putting it out after all. Then Weasel decided to can his label and the Wannabes decided to can the changing Lookout. And now they're stuck with a second album in the can and nobody to put it out. MP-08 THE CONNIE DUNGS "I Hate This Town!" EP -- reissue of a 1990s pop-punk classic, with a new PS. First 500 on clear gold vinyl. Technically this is the third CONNIE DUNGS 7", after their split with TUGBOAT and the Harmless Records release, but actually, this is the little record that first put the band on the map. Six great songs on one spinning slab, featuring Brandon Dung's plaintive lyrics and inimitable voice. This has long been one of peoples' all time favorite Mutant Pop Records, and it's my pleasure to bring it out of hibernation for another go round, despite my having previously called "last pressing" on a 45 piece edition in 2000 on opaque orange wax (long depleted).

-- THE CONNIE DUNGS. Pop punk poetry set to crunching guitars, sung by an ubernasal vocal contortionist. Words don't do justice. Utterly unique in sound. For my money one of the 4 biggest pop-punk bands of the 1990s (along with Screeching Weasel, The Queers, and MTX). You might add Jawbreaker and make it 5. Brandon Tussey "Dung" is a troubled soul and a great artist. The songs are upbeat and catchy, and heartfelt. The lyrics, first rate. Early material was cartoonish, later material much more serious and poetic in a Jets to Brazil/Weakerthans sort of way. This was one of the biggest bands "on" the label from 1996-2000. Brandon changed the band name to A Radio With Guts and made one more album after my 5. There is some chance he'll be back on MP someday; the probability of a new 7" is very, very high.--T. MP-42 THE LOBLAWS "Won't Stop!" EP -- the first "new" Mutant Pop band and these mothers have the keys to the car. They cover a BEATNIK TERMITES song with authority, that'll tell you where they're at. Ultra smooth, dreamy thick vox over crunchy guitars. HIT TUNES!!! This is my new favorite band and I'm sure it will be the same for many of you as well. The plant ran out of red stock after just 203 copies and had to buy vinyl from another plant -- which came in a totally different shade! Imprint also ran the sleeve with a defective font with typos on the back and wound up redoing things. So the first 200 out the door are gonna be a little special -- the rare shade of vinyl in the typo sleeves... Yowza! And it's not only one of the best MP records ever.

THE LOBLAWS "Won't Stop!" Seriously, they won't. Dig the new breed, Mutant Pop 2.0: The Loblaws hail from Nashville, Tennessee, home of dumb country music and dumber country music fans. But don't hold their city against them, these guys aren't country in the least -- they have roots in a killer underground pop-punk band called The Robinsons, which toiled magnificently in New Orleans until a little storm called Katrina came along and scattered 'em... The three brothers and friend in this band (the latter a member of BACKSEAT VIRGINS) have been at it for a decade now in various groups and by now they have the songwriting and recording thangs down cold -- incredible pop-punk hooks and layer after layer of sugar sweet harmonies copped from THE BEACH BOYS. They cover the BEATNIK TERMITES on this four song debut record -- few bands can pull that challenging task off -- and they do it spectacularly. A taste of RAMONES downstroking, some of the catchiest originals you're ever gonna hear, and MASTERFUL vocal delivery makes for a very satisfying 4 song pop-punk rip... Many people think this is the best record Mutant Pop has ever released. Al l the others have not heard it. Chandler's blurb on the back of the sleeve really does say it all:

First recorded at the fabulous Sonic Iguana studios in 1997, this blistering 4 song EP is a masterpiece of the 7" vinyl format, a veritable mini-album. THE STORY OF THE CATALOGS

The Catalogs were a thoroughly obscure band from HAWAI'I. In the middle 1990s there was a fairly HUGE pop-punk scene in Hawai'i and this was the big band around which all things rotated. There was a pop-punk radio DJ named Johnny Jujubee that did a weekly show on UHawaii campus radio and that fanned the flames. The scene in Honolulu was as good as that anywhere in the country.

The Queers, one of the holy trinity of Lookout Records Pop-Punk Bands (Screeching Weasel, Queers, Mr. T Experience) toured Hawai'i, played a great show there, and scored a demo tape from one of the opening bands -- The Catalogs. It was actually a band-produced commercial issue, rather than putting out 7" vinyl, the Catalogs produced a cassette. Anyway, Joe Queer fell in love with the song "Another Girl" on that tape and covered the song on the enormously popular 1996 Lookout album, Don't Back Down. This was the exact high water mark of The Queers as a band, Lookout as a pop-punk label, and the pop-punk scene in America. EVERYBODY had that album! And so there was a song that everyone knew, written by a little band in Hawai'i that nobody had ever heard of, a band which had never released a single record or CD in its life!

Well anyway, the band moved to the mainland in 1997 and I was in touch with them. I forget how I got in touch, probably contacted them with a view to making the "original" version of Another Girl made so famous by Joe Queer... Which we did. On Dec. 6-7, 1997, we went into the studio in Portland, Oregon, where we recorded 8 tracks for a Mutant Pop 7" Record. I was the producer of the session; I bear a huge chunk of responsibility for the recording's shortcomings.

We thought it would be funny for the Catalogs to return the favor to the Queers, by covering one of Joe Queer's songs. The band chose "I Met Her at the Rat," so that's what we did. But the band had made very impressive royalties from Lookout for having sold thousands and thousands of copies of Don't Back Down, so we decided to give the Queers cover a miss, not wanting to run up costs on the EP or to incur the wrath of Joe for not paying royalties to him when when his label had paid (thousands?) of dollars to The Catalogs...

Anyway, I picked the songs, warm feelings all around, and I soft pitched them to do a CD later.

Then things sort of fell apart. Mutant Pop Records has one ironclad rule -- the "band photo on the front of the sleeve always" rule... And, for whatever reason, the Catalogs were never able to produce a usable image for the front of the sleeve. I sent in the record to have lacquers cut, to have the metal parts made.... Waiting for the cover shot. It never came. I had test pressings done. Still no photo. Never got a photo. Life moved on and I went on to other projects. The stampers were returned to me by the plant. And the band broke up and the project was forgotten.

Then in 1999, something became clear to me. While the move from 1000 Flowers wholesale to the Incredible Mutant Pop Catalog (retail) kept the chips coming in, I had lost critical mass to make vinyl an economical proposition. Each record was showing about $1000 of red ink and I knew that I could not make it to my goal of 100 different EPs in the series... So right when I pulled the plug on the format, I decided, screw it, I might not make 100 different records, but at least I can create a few cool collectors' items on the way out the door, and the label will be remembered for that much at least. So I, rashly and without informing the band, sent the stampers to Bill Smith Custom Records in 2000 and told them to whip me up 300 copies or so on green vinyl. Since this was a "bootleg" -- true fact, there are examples in punk record history of labels bootlegging themselves, see, for example, a "bootleg" B-side on the first single by The Rezillos... I decided to play up the aspect of "whoops, the plant made a mistake" by using "wrong" labels on there. I used old MP-01 Underhand Type 1 labels that I had around, knowing that nobody could possibly confuse Underhand with The Catalogs. Many of the bootlegs I bought in the 1970s had "wrong" labels on them, and this was a small tribute to those. It's also a cheap way to make a record, incidentally, because it allowed me to dodge the $86 needed to produce 1000 pairs of "correct" labels. First thing you know, I had 280 copies of my very own bootleg, of a recording that I produced, of a band that no one had heard of... The stuff needed to get out, not to die as test pressings. Mission accomplished.

But this was late in the day for me. Mutant Pop was evolving very rapidly into a CD-R label, and the fan base was withering because of that turn... I sold very few of these records -- a few dozen. And then the band got wind of what I was doing and wanted their copies (as they had every right to do!). Fortunately or unfortunately, the boxes of "bootlegs" were lost in the jumble of my shoe store basement-slash-record warehouse. The band never got their copies and I didn't have copies to sell either. And there the situation sat.

Then in March 2008 I decided to reactivate Mutant Pop, in part to clean up the little messes like this one, the Catalogs record that should have been released properly but never was. The warehouse jumble was unjumbled, boxes of green Catalogs records subsequently unearthed. In early 2008 I mailed the band leader, Les Hernandez, 100 copies -- technically "legalizing" the release. I kept the remainder, about 140 copies or some number like that. We made plans to properly release the Catalogs record, with a real sleeve and real labels and a new color of vinyl for the "first" pressing. But the cover photo problem remains a real one. Supposedly Les is having a drawing made, which will have to suffice. But I'm still waiting and other projects are now absorbing my time. I've been in this situation before!-  T.
