Combining the clumsy charm of a Moe Tucker Velvet Underground tune with the ineptitude (if that’s a word) of the mighty Shaggs, it’s another masterpiece of kiddie garage psych from the Mystic Zephyrs 4. Real kiddie garage psych, mind you – the Mystic Zephyrs 4 consisted of guitarist and songwriter Lynne, 18 years old, bassist Keith, 16, organist Gayle, 14, and drummer Joyce, 12. That’s right, a female drummer who was only twelve years old! What’s YOUR excuse, Moe Tucker? Despite this, “Reach Out” has an undeniable spooky grace to it, a baroque popsike gem that might sound like a Strawberry Alarm Clock or Procol Harum backing track without the frequently off-key (but oh so cute) lead vocals. Really, it’s the BEST thing I’ve heard from them. “Don’t Bring Me Down,” on the other hand, is like those wince-inducing moments when Lawrence Welk used to let some frightened 8-year-old on stage to sing some old Marilyn Monroe standard. MUCH rarer than their “Youthquake” single (of which only 50 were pressed, I hear), but not quite as rare as their 1974 album (yeah, they actually managed to record a full LP, which I haven’t heard), “Reach Out” may be their finest hour (or 2 and a half minutes). And I strongly doubt they pressed more than 50 of these puppies either.
