Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and rare LP from Spanish Decca (SXL 2135, LP pressed in Spain / UK jacket, black/silver WBg label: ZAL-4405-2M/4406-3M stampers, stereo, laminated flipback sleeve) features Peter Maag’s magical accounts of Mozart’s Symphonies No. 32 in G Major K. 318 and No. 38 in D Major K. 504 ‘Prague’ with the London Symphony Orchestra on sparkling form. The recording sessions were held in the fabled acoustics of Kingsway Hall on 24 and 26-28 January 1959 (producer: Erik Smith / engineer: Kenneth E. Wilkinson, engineer).

Indeed, Maag’s direction is warm and spirited, with the Londoners clearly responding in kind to their Swiss maestro – a wonderful rendition from first bar to last, with demonstration quality sound to match. Wrote the critic T.H. in his review for the August 1959 issue of The Gramophone: “This is a highly sensitive performance of the Prague. The conductor has edited it in the right way: that is to say, he has added dynamic markings, shaded off this and filled out the tone of that, so as to bring out the underlying colour and mood of each passage as he himself sees it. It is, in fact, a performance of character. The L.S.O. carries out his intentions with both virtuosity and most beautiful playing and the result is certainly a record of distinction.”

PLEASE NOTE:

This LP was pressed by Spanish Decca; however, it has found its way into a UK Decca jacket.

Incidentally, the liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket are by Sir Hubert Parry, from his The Evoluation of the Art of Music, and by Gordon Stewart. The striking cover design is not credited.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of jacket is GOOD. There is bumping/wear at corners, some small instances of laminate lift, creasing, discoloration (more so to the rear panel), and a small sticker to the same. On the plus side, there are no seamsplitsor other defects and the album remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. There are some stray non-sounding marks and though the surfaces are not absolutely CD silent, in general the playback is  superb. If you must have a flawless or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
