redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome 2 LP gatefold set from RCA (7786-1 RC, US pressing, Red Seal label, DDD stereo) features conductor Sir Charles Mackerras and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s exalted and joyous account of Handel’s Messiah, recorded in demonstration quality sound at Henry Wood Hall, London, during 1-5 January 1988.

Joining Mackerras and the RPO on this momentous occasion were the following soloists:

            Felicity Lott, soprano

            Felicity Palmer, alto

            Philip Langridge, tenor

            Robert Lloyd, bass

Huddersfield Choral Society (Chorus Master: Brian Kay)

            Harpsichord: Vivian Troon

            Organ: John Birch

            Trumpet: Murray Greig

            Trombone: Robert Holliday

At the superb music retailer Arkivmusic one can find the following review:

“A stellar line up of soloists, conductor, choir and orchestra combine forces in the remastered 2 CD set of Mozart's arrangement of Handel's much loved 'Messiah'. In April 1742, shortly after the first performance of Messiah in Dublin for the city's Charitable Musical Society, the Dublin Journal reported that the oratorio 'was allowed by the greatest of Judges to be the finest Composition of Musick that was ever heard'. Sir Charles Mackerras continues the constantly evolving performance history of one of the world's most enduring masterpieces.”

This album was produced by Andrew Keener and engineered by Mike Clements and Mike Hatch. The striking cover photo was taken by Bay Hippisley while the insightful liner notes were written by Robert Maycock (printed in English and German). The interior panels of the gatefold jacket also carry session photos by Bob Workman and the vocal texts (in English).

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the gatefold jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other flaws, and the album remain solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT throughout and the playback in both is outstanding – overall, truly fine collector's copies.
