The release includes a soft-cover 36 page book and 12'' 5-track EP pressed on 180 gram vinyl, featuring previously unissued music by the band in a limited edition run of 500 copies. Mad River formed at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1965 and, inspired by what was happening in San Francisco, moved to Berkeley in early 1967, just in time for the Summer of Love. During their brief time together they released a now highly-sought-after 7'' EP and two albums for Capitol Records. The Shagrat release is a substantial addition to their catalogue. Housed in the same sleeve as the vinyl 12'', the 12'' x 12'' 36-page, full colour, mini-coffee table book features a 26,000 word history of the band written by Ugly Things journalist David Biasotti, revealing many unknown stories and details about this legendary, Berkeley-based quintet. The book is profusely illustrated with many photos and other memorabilia which have never been seen before. The band played all the infamous psychedelic ballrooms such as the Avalon, the Fillmore and the Straight Theater, sharing the bill with the likes of Country Joe & the Fish, Phil Ochs, the Vanilla Fudge and Santana, who opened for them on a number of occasions. Both their albums are now rightfully regarded as classics of the era. Acting as a kind of soundtrack to the book, the 12'' record contains five cuts that have never been officially released before, including the four numbers the band cut in Dayton Ohio in early 1967 as a demo before they re-located to California. These show that whilst the band was influenced by the likes of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Country Joe & the Fish (whom drummer Greg Dewey eventually joined and played Woodstock with) and their friends the Youngbloods, they were also pretty fully formed before they set off for the West Coast, as the embryonic 'Windchimes' included here testifies. It was former Youngblood Jerry Corbitt who produced the other long-lost gem from '69, 'Jersey Sloo' in this set - showing that away from the long flowing psychedelic numbers, the band could also write concise, accessible, two-minute rockers (even if the lyrics were completely whacked out!). Music items &amp: Co.:
We generally use the standard Goldmine grading system and orientate by grading records on the information from recordcollectorsguild.org but include EX (Excellent) as grading between VG+ and Near Mint.We always grade Cover and record / CD seperately.
It is of course impossible to grade every item also by listening to the complete record, so we generally do only a visible grading.For expensive items or items with lots of signs of use we also do an
audible check.NEW items are not always delivered sealed from the manufacturer or distributor. If it is important for you to know if a NEW item is sealed please ask before ordering.

Neu / New = New and unplayed copy

Mint: Absolutely perfect in every way.

Near Mint: Almost perfect . Record and cover should look and play as if the item was just bought and only used 1-2 times. No visible signs of use, except 1 or 2 minimal hairlines that can be noticed only by taking a detailed and close look.

Excellent (EX): Not as perfect as Near Mint, but in very good used condition. It is obvious that the pre-owner took good care of the item. Some very light &quot:classical &quot:signs of use or hairlines can appear from taking the record in and out of the cover or constant use over many years, BUT no large or deep scratches are allowed ! record must play without any problems or affection of sound quality. Compared to a VG+ record, an EX item does not have seam split and the signs of use must be very few .

Very Good Plus (VG+): Generally the same as EX but item can have more and more significant signs of use. Cover can show signs from storage on corners or spine or slight ringwear. Few light scratches can appear on the record, but those must not affect the play. Record must play without problems, no skipping or constant clicks or crackles are allowed to appear during the listening but can appear in extremely quit parts or between the songs.

Very Good (VG) : Generally the same as VG+ , but with more than just a few signs of use. More than just 1 or 2 larger scratches can appear on the record and the general &quot:look&quot: of the item is not as good as a VG+ item. Sound quality can affected also during longer parts , BUT record must play through without skipping or jumping.

Good (G): „Good” does not mean Bad! But almost :-) ! A record graded as Good (G) must also play though without skipping or jumping, but the sound and the general appearance of the item is strongly affected. Cover can show lots of seam split, strong ringwear, discoloration, small damages from price stickers or can be stamped.

Poor (P): Well... not to be called a NICE item anymore. Should only be used to fill the gap in a collection untill a better copy appears. Record can skip or jump, cover can have all sorts of damages (water damage, large damage from price stickers, cut-outs.....)
