Description
Mae West had a younger sister, Mildred. In an attempt to glamorize herself, Mildred changed her name to Beverly West when she was trying to follow in her sister Mae’s footsteps. She would never amount to anything professionally and would remain loved but also a burden to Mae for the rest of her life.
Beverly, an unhappy woman became a severe alcoholic who was forever embarrassing Mae with her drunken antics with married men to careening and pinballing drunkenly around the lobbies of movie palaces where Mae’s pictures were premiering.
In later years, Beverly’s drinking became so intense that it forced Mae to send her to rehab to ‘dry out’. Living in Mae’s ranch in Sepulveda (now North Hill, Ca), Mae forbade anyone from getting liquor to Beverly but somehow she would get it. Along with the drinking came major depression and Mae, concerned and wanting to cheer Beverly up, had some blues recordings that Beverly recorded in the 30’s transferred to a small 7” vinyl record calling it “Beverly Arden’s Torch Blues”.
200 copies were produced with the intention that Beverly would give them to her friends. But due to her heAvy drinking, her mind was at times delusional and Beverly began to believe that this record was available commercially and that record companies were preparing to sign her (!!). The plan backfired in a big way and these records sat in a trunk at Mae’s beach house in Santa Monica until its sale in 1978.
Beverly’s voice and style were similar to Mae’s since they were sisters. I think you will be surprised at how good these recordings are.
