Description

Original UK large Vertigo spiral label stereo press.

Magna Carta were a prog/folk trio formed in London in April 1969 and performed their first gig in May. They were signed by Philips Records soon after and released their first album on the Fontana label in mid-1969. Around the same time Philips were setting up a new progressive rock label, Vertigo Records, which launched its first album by Colosseum in November 1969. The band were transfered to Vertigo and recorded their second album 'Seasons' late in 1969. This was in part a concept album on side 1 and a selection of new songs on side 2, released in early 1970. The album was a success and reached no. 55 in the UK. Lyell Tranter left the band after its release and Magna Carta MK I was over, eventually being replaced by Davey Johnstone for the next album 'Songs From Wasties Orchard' in 1971.

This is the original issue with the large Vertigo spiral labels, with the earliest 1Y//1 2Y//3 matrices and 1-1-1/1-1-1 stampers of the very 1st presses.
The matt gatefold sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light edge/corner wear and light storage rubbing/scuffing on the front cover. The inner cover has some light rubbing. The spine is intact and fully readable, the Vertigo spiral inner is intact, with a small tear on one edge, slightly discoloured & in VG+ condition.   The record is in visually EX condition, with only a couple of faint & wispy sleeve removal hairlines & scuffs visible under bright light on each side, but there is a slight edge warp that does not affect play. The labels are in EX+ condition, clean & bright with evidence of a couple of faint spindle markings.   The sound reproduction is EX+, still clear & precise throughout with no loud pops or crackle & definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some low background noise during the run in grooves.
Overall, a really great, clear and punchy listen.   The matrix nos. are; 6360003, 1Y//1 stamper 1-1-1, 2Y//3, stamper 1-1-1. This is one of the earliest copies of the 1st pressing of the original 1970 UK stereo issue of this album!
