KENWOOD )

CHARACTERISTICS OF DISK AND COVER: (1) Very rare Japanese first issue of Mal's “Number Nineteen” from Alan Bates’ Freedom Records; audiophile pressing on quality vinyl made by JAPAN TRIO; probably no CD released yet. As LP item, globally long out of print and thus hard to find and get, (2) thick cardboard jacket on whose reverse side English liner notes by Alun Morgan is printed ( I have so far never seen an UK or Germany or Dutch original of Number Nineteen. Probably, however, Mal's black / white photo cover design of this listed Japanese LP is not from the original Freedom edition, but is thought to have been designed as Japan-specific in Japan. According to the back cover description or paper insert sheet, Mal’s monochrome picture-taking and sleeve design was undertaken by a Japanese designer or Katsuji Abe), (3) Red Freedom logo / yellow label used, (4) disk weight app. 122g, (5) cardboard cover weight app. 130g, (6) OBI missing, (7) Japanese critic liner notes, whose reverse side provides the same black and white photo of Mal as the front cover does, is attached.

COVER CONDITION: VG++ close to NM ( the cover has a shallow and small dent near the center of front cover and also some stains on the right bottom of front cover or on near the center of back cover, but no doubt in a great condition )

JAPANESE CRITIC COMMENTARY PAPER SHEET CONDITION: NM

ANTI STATIC PLASTIC INNER SLEEVE CONDITION: VG+ (some crinkles or creases)

ADDITIONAL NOTES: No Tin-Pan Alley music selected and all tracks (medium to fast tempo music) originally written by Mal. Being supported by both (probably) Dutch  drummer, whose beat is adopted from not only jazz, but also rock music or African music etc,  and a steady bassist, Mal  persistently plays his original songs with deep feeling of blues and  his own piano artistry part of which was once called ‘telegraph style’ by Nat Hentoff. On the back cover, Alun Morgan concludes his liner notes by citing John Tynan’s comments about Mal Waldron as follows; Tynan’s words still ring true today: “Waldron is not one of those ‘spectacular’ pianists. His message is simple; there is an overriding and realized desire to swing hard, his left hand paints sharp, keenly delineated harmonic pictures while the right sketches spare etchings of melodic line. He is one of the most satisfying of contemporary pianists because his style is completely devoid of furbelow and phoniness.”
