Manilla Road-Mark of the Beast 1981/2002 US 2LP Monster Records MLP 0100: The lore surrounding this one is rather fantastic: the unreleased Manilla Road recordings originally meant for release after the debut album, but shelved in favor of a more metallic direction shift. This finally saw a proper commercial release in 2002 courtesy of Monster aka Rockadrome Records from Texas. Everything about this both sonically and aesthetically just rules; long spacey jamming tracks with Mark Shelton's lyrical prowess weaving otherworldly tales, all wrapped in a thick stock gatefold with amazing artwork from Thin Lizzy illustrator Jim Fitzpatrick. This did get a subsequent reissue under the name "Dreams of Eschaton" from an earlier generation cassette, and that is great too, but I still somehow go back to this one as the running order is etched in my brain as the way these tracks should be heard. Plus, the liner notes from Phil Baker (RIP) are an integral part of the package for me as well. If you've read this far, you likely know how important Manilla Road were in the evolution of epic heavy metal, and these recordings are an important piece of the puzzle that is their vast discography. Beautiful condition all around, and includes the original two panel poster as well. VG++/VG++
