Rare Mono US Original Pressing with Capitol
"Rainbow" Labels & while not stated, we believe
this to be a Promotional Copy because there is a
large pasted-on paper sticker on back cover listing
song timings and credits (this is how Capitol
marked their Promo Copies back then)

this is a great album of rich flowing melodies
set in Exotic Instrumental arrangements glorifying
the sounds and styles of Polynesia & South America
with lush strings and some subtle synthesizer

the front cover features a dreamy Sexy Cheesecake
Diane Webber aka Marguerite Empey who was a Playboy
model and a famous nudist & was twice Playboy's
Playmate of the Month (in May 1955 + February 1956)
with the 1956 photos taken by the great Russ Meyer

record is in Excellent - Condition and has been
fully Play Tested and it Sounds Fantastic and plays with
no skips or repeats with a warm full loud tone with only
occasional mellow crackle (although there is a brief spot at
the start of the 2nd song where the intense high-end is a
bit overdriven sounding) & the LP has shiny clean vinyl
with just light visible wear & has bright clean wear-
free labels that have no writing or markings

the cover is in Very Good + Condition with bold bright
printing and has no writing or markings but does have
a little wear to the corners & edges & the top and
bottom seams do have neat clear-tape repairs
but these are only seen up close

~ Review ~


around the time Capitol released this record
Exotica was either peaking or starting the decline into
obscurity until its late 90s revival, but Les Baxter was still
releasing at least one quality album a release a year. this
great has a dream-like essence mainly carried by a floating
body of strings accompanied by winds that dart back and
forth like schools of fish. Quiet rhythms turn up on some of
the numbers as well as do shimmering keyboards, but all
these elements blend nicely together. Key selections are
"The Ancient Galleon" which has a great waltzing cadence
and "Sunken City" builds to a gentle crescendo, "Sea Numph"
retains Baxter's poppy bounce of previous releases & the
great "Enchanted Sea" displays a perfect balance of wonder
with just a hint of sinister mysticism. this LP remains a fav
of Baxter fans + those who admire the beautiful cover
star Marguerite Empey who was a Playboy Playmate


~ Les Baxter ~


Baxter studied piano at the Detroit Conservatory
before moving to Los Angeles for further studies at
Pepperdine College. Abandoning a concert career as a
pianist, he turned to popular music as a singer joining
Mel Tormé's Mel-Tones and also sang on great Artie Shaw
records like "What Is This Thing Called Love?" then turning
to arranging and conducting for Capitol Records in 1950
and in 1953 he scored his first movie, the sailing travelogue
Tanga Tika. He also achieved success with concept albums
of his own orchestral suites, but he is best-known and
loved for his Exotica Recordings of the '50s and '60s


~ Marguerite Empey ~


Marguerite Empey aka Diane Webber was an
American model, dancer and actress best-known
for being a two-time Playboy Playmate of the Month
in May 1955 & in February 1956 with the latter photos
taken by soft- core porn director Russ Meyer

Empey took ballet lessons from Russian ballerina
Maria Befefi and later worked as a chorus girl at Bimbo's in
San Francisco. In 1955, she married Joe Webber. She later
took an interest in nudism & appeared in numerous nudist
magazines. The Wonderful Webbers by June Lange, published
by Elysium Inc in 1967, documented the Webbers' nudist life
style. Webber posed for many famous photographers such as
Peter Gowland, Bunny Yeager and Russ Meyer & also appeared
on the covers for several vinyl record LP albums including
Les Baxter's Jewels of the Sea, Sea of Dreams by
Nelson Riddle Marty Paich's Jazz For Relaxation
and Chile con Cugie by Xavier Cugat

since everyone has their own ideas about grading the condition
of records, we've decided to spell out how we do it. our descriptions are
also extremely thorough & individually note flaws that a generic condition grade
cannot. we also occasionally assign a + and - for in-between grades

Mint

perfect, never played & usually still factory sealed

Near Mint

nearly perfect with almost no signs of handling

Excellent

the slightest visual wear that in no way interferes with the sound

 Very Good +

light visible signs of handling & wear but well taken care of
and plays with only mellow occasional crackle and/or soft pops but 
nothing interfering with enjoying the record/artwork

Very Good

obviously used & handled, but not mishandled, with no skips,
repeats or bad noise, but with noticeable crackle, pops & soft tics or
artwork defects, but nothing too bad overall

 Very Good -

considerable visible wear & background noise with possible
skips, repeats, tics and cover flaws, but still enjoyable & would
be obviously well-used and somewhat mishandled

So-So

anything below VG- which we rarely sell, except
for really rare records that are worth listing only because
they're so hard to find & sought-after in any condition

Disclaimer

not everyone's turntable sounds & functions the same, but we
have a nice sensitive set-up that makes flaws very obvious to us and we try
to note everything we ear and see. while vinyl is an awesome sounding format,
there is almost always some sort of background noise while listening to a
record. we are just about as picky as anyone, so trust us
but be sure to read our descriptions carefully!
