A woman in Bluegrass Music is a rarity, but a talented woman-leader of an outstanding Blue- grass Band is even more unusual. In fact, one of the few that I have ever heard of is Betty Fisher with her Dixie Bluegrass Band, from Marietta, Georgia. I met Betty and the Band at a popular Bluegrass Festival in Lawtey, Florida in April of 1972, and was immediately impressed with their stage presentation and sound. I had a chance to meet this lovely young lady and was equally impressed with her warm, friendly personality—and, with her genuine enthusiasm for Bluegrass Music, and my artists, Jim & Jesse. To me, the outstanding qualities of a good artist is the pure love for and interest in the music they produce, which radiates from the stage when they perform; plus a feeling of closeness and respect for the people who come to listen to them perform. All of this is very evident when Betty Fisher and The Dixie Bluegrass Band are on stage. Each member of the Band is an artist and a personality in his own right. Put them all to- gether and you have a “Prize Winning Recipe” for good Bluegrass Music. Betty is a veteran performer and has her own style of playing lead guitar, which is most unusual for a woman. A lovely young lady, just bursting with talent and personality is Murphy Hicks from Clarksville who plays bass. The talented fiddle player is George Gillis from Sarasota, Florida. Outstanding dobro work is done by Richard Hollis from Chester, South Carolina. Tommy Jackson, a teenager from Marietta, adds much to the Band with his smooth voice and fine banjo picking. I would like to make this a personal message to each of you to buy and request this album by Betty; and to each of our Disc Jockey friends to share it with their listeners, via the turntables.
