This handsome LP – fairly rare in any early stereo pressing – from Italian Columbia (SAXQ 5274, Italian pressing, red semi-circle label – ED2, stereo) features conductor Igor Markevitch and the Philharmonia Orchestra’s trenchant account of Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps (The Sacred Rite of Spring), recorded at EMI Studiio No. 1, Abbey Road, London, in 1959 and sounding absolutely splendid here.

Markevitch remains among the great interpreters of Le sacre du printemps and even if not a first choice, his insights demand hearing. The Philharmonia plays with tremendous panache.

The beautiful cover art reproduces a detail from Gentile’s “La danse di derain”. There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Italian only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears virtually as new. There are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
