This beautiful and rare LP from Christophorus (SCGLV 75952, German pressing, gray label, stereo) features one of the great violin records to be made in Germany in the 1960s, namely Wolfgang Marschner’s extraordinary mixed recital program made with pianist Karin Elsner.

The exact contents are as follows:

Giuseppe Tartini (arr: Fritz Kreisler): Sonata in G minor “Devil’s Trill” (cadenza by Marschner)

Niccolò Paganini: Hexentänze Op. 11 (Moto perpetuo in C Major)

Wolfgang Marschner: Paganini Variations

Pablo de Sarasate: Zigeunerweisen Op. 20

Camille Saint-Saëns (arr. Georges Bizet): Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso Op. 28

Maurice Ravel: Tzigane

This is exalted playing by any measure – one senses a tremendous re-creative personality behind the bow. His reading of Tartini “Devil’s Trill” Sonata can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Oistrakh, Michelucci, Milstein, et al. Marschner’s own fascinating “Paganini Variations” is worth the price of admission alone – a magnificent disc from first to last. Moreover, the acoustic Marschner was recorded in is truly fine, with a lovely ambience to it.

The striking cover photo of Marschner is credited to Dünhöft, Cologne. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by H.B., printed in German only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. The only flaw concerns the beginning of a 1” split (more a crack, not actually split) to the top edge. Otherwise, the album appears virtually as new. There is minor bumping/wear to the upper- and lower-right corners, as well as mild shelfwear. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
